Losing The Last Few Pounds

While a properly balanced diet and exercise can play a huge role in losing weight, there usually comes a time when you just don’t seem to be able to lose that last few pounds. That is when the use of the right type of supplements can help you complete your weight loss program.

In the rest of this article, we will explain more about the five top supplements which have for many years helped people to lose weight. Please note that the results might not be the same for every individual and that you have to talk to your doctor before embarking on any diet, exercise regime, or supplement program – particularly if you are using other types of medication, pregnant or under age.

Apple Cider Vinegar

Used thousands of years ago by the ancient Egyptians and passed on from one generation to the next, apple cider vinegar is widely renowned for its ability to help one lose weight. The most positive aspect of using apple cider vinegar as a supplement is that it does not come with any nasty side effects. Even older adults and children can use this natural supplement as part of a balanced weight loss program.

Apple cider vinegar balances your blood sugar levels, improves satiety (i.e. it makes you feel full), reduces body fat, has probiotic functions for a healthier gut, and helps you sleep better.

Hoodia

Hoodia has in recent years become very popular in the weight loss industry because it is so effective as an appetite suppressant. It appears naturally in the Kalahari desert in Southern Africa, and the herb has been turned into supplements and tablets to help people lose weight.

Although Hoodia can help you to lose quite a lot of weight in a relatively short period, it is not recommended to use this product for extended periods of time as part of a fitness maintenance regime.

Prescription Medication

People who are worried about using supplements of an unknown origin often opt for prescription diet supplements. Regulated as well as tested by the FDA, these diet pills claim to have no or minimal side effects. Some of their primary functions include blocking carbohydrates, appetite suppression, and fat burning.

These pills are, however, sometimes expensive but they have the benefit of medical research to vouch for their effectiveness.

Propolene

This supplement is widely used in diet supplements. Its functions include fat burning and suppressing your appetite. Once it reaches your stomach, it creates a type of fibre mass.  It fools your brain into thinking that your stomach is full and there is no need to eat more. Propolene also doesn’t have any known nasty side effects, compared to many other alternatives its the safest options.

Orlistat

Orlistat (Alli) is a highly effective diet aid that can be bought over the counter.  It is intended for obese adults (aged 18 and older) who at the same time follow a low-fat, reduced-calorie diet.

Orlistat belongs to a type of drugs known as lipase inhibitors. It prevents your intestines from absorbing around 25% of all the fat that you consume. The rest is excreted via the normal bowel movements.

Some research suggests that Orlistat can be beneficial in the reduction of a particularly nasty kind of belly fat known as visceral fat, which has been connected to high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke and cardiovascular disease.

While medication and supplements can help with your weight loss journey. It still comes down to burning fewer calories than your daily metabolic requirements. Supplements can contribute to making this easier, but they will only be effective when combined with a calorie-controlled diet.

I have to admit I’ve never been one for supplements as a way to lose weight. Being a scientist I’m always skeptical about their claims.
