Dusseldorf is a city often overlooked for more pretty neighbouring cities like Cologne, it is not lined with beautiful buildings that as tourists we often want to see. Dusseldorf is one of the wealthiest cities and ranks sixth in the world of best places to live in. It truly is a livable city, very vibrant but not overrun by street vendors nor tourists. Thanks to the recent conference I was able to visit Dusseldorf again after 10 years and got a chance to explore the city.
Dusseldorf is the seventh largest city in Germany and operates the third busiest international airport in the county. The city is located in the western region of the country and over the last century has grown into a cultural hub. Dusseldorf is a city split by the Rhine river, the old town on one side and the commercial side on another. For those short on time but still want to explore the city, in this post we share reasons to visit Dusseldorf.
REASONS TO VISIT DUSSELDORF, GERMANY
There are many reasons why you must visit Dusseldorf, whilst Frankfurt is the financial capital of Germany, Dusseldorf is its fashion capital. The city is also home to many European and Japenese company headquarters and its famous for its nightlife. Which after the last conference, I can definitely attest to its incredible nightlife. In this post, we hope to share a few reasons why you should visit Dusseldorf and places of interest.
GETTING TO AND AROUND DÜSSELDORF
Thanks to the city’s fantastic public transport system, you can move around the city with much ease. If you’re planning to spend more than a day in the city then purchase the city card to use public transport for free. The city of Dusseldorf can be reached in less than 30 minutes from the international airport via train. It is important to be aware of the airport you’re flying into as budget airlines like Ryanair fly into an airport 70 miles from the city.
WHERE TO STAY IN DÜSSELDORF
Dusseldorf is a fairly large city and has in abundance many types of accommodation and depending on your budget, you can find something to suit your needs. Often when I travel alone unless, for work, I often opt for hostels. Backpackers Dusseldorf is a budget-friendly hostel, nothing special but good enough to spend a few days. For a mid-range hotel, I would recommend the Leonardo Hotel Dusseldorf which is located in the city centre and close to the airport.
9 PLACES & REASONS TO VISIT IN DUSSELDORF
The first I visited Dusseldorf was 10 years again for my first international church conference and we had the best fun. We had plans to explore the city, we explored the city but I still remember nothing of the places we explored. This time around when I got the church to return to the first German city I ever visited, I wanted to make it count. Because I was short on time, I knew taking a city tour bus would help me maximise my journey.
Explore Dusseldorf’s Old Town {Altstadt}
One thing I loved about Dusseldorf’s old town is just how compact it is, you can walk the breadth of it and see so much. You will be surrounded by beautiful restaurants cafe on cobblestone streets. The nightlife in the old town is one of the unmissable attractions in Dusseldorf, its electrifying.
Dusseldorf’s ‘KONIGSALLEE’ Street
The city of Dusseldorf is considered the fashion capital of Europe because of Konigsallee street where its residents are more often than not dressed to the hilt in designer gear. When you rock up into Konigsallee street, you will notice the high-end brands lining the entire street.
Carlstadt Markplatz
Carlstadt markplatz is the oldest street market in the city and the best place to find the freshest produce. It serves up a variety of German foods including some of the best gourmet dishes you shouldn’t miss.
Quench your thirst with Altbier
I am not much of a beer drinker but when in Germany, you’ve got to try their local beers which each city/town has its own. Dusseldorf alone has eight brewers that all brew altbier which makes for the perfect beer sampling trip.
Taste liqueur Killepitsch
I am a great lover of spirits but Killepitsch definitely kicked me to the ninth, this herb and berries blood red combo is almost exclusive to Dusseldorf. There are only a few places in the city that sell it, it is definitely worth giving a try, you can buy it from Killepitschstube.
Japenese Garden in Nordpark
Whenever I go somewhere new, I make a point of checking out their local park, its also a nice way to relax when you’re limited on time but have a jam-packed itinerary. The Japenese gardens is a place of tranquillity in the city and it brings together both German and Japenese culture.
Stroll along the Rhine Promenade
This is a must do especially for those visiting during summer where you can take a seat and enjoy the views of the Rhine river. There is nothing I love more than being able to sit by the riverside and just take it all in.
Visit Medienhafen
Dusseldorf is not only a fashion city but rather an art city too when you take your time to explore the city you will be amazed at the art scene. I think my most favourite is in Medienhafen, a place where modern art lives, you just need to stare at the buildings to know.
Rhine Tower – 360 view of the city
The Rhine tower is over 240 metres high and offers unparalleled views of the city, for a mere €9. You take the elevator to the bar and lounge area then view the city on 360 degrees for some amazing views. Rhine tower can be seen from most places in Dusseldorf and is a short walk from Medienhafen.

I have been to Germany twice but not to Dusseldorf yet, you have a great list of things to do in Dusseldorf. I didnt know it is so near to cologne, we were there to see the Cathedral in Cologne.
