The haircare industry today is positively booming and set to reach over $116 billion by 2024 but did you know the dos and don’ts of hair care products? And all that is because the number of hair care products is growing, and they become more sophisticated and specialized. Today you can find a dozen different types of products to care for any type of locks and it’s very tempting to use all that if you want to get the dreamy shiny hair that movie stars have on the screen.
However, you should never forget that the haircare industry is a business and selling is its main goal. Therefore, not all of these amazing products are truly necessary for the majority of people. So, before you go on a shopping spree that will cost you a few hundred, you should understand what kind of hair care products you should be using and when.

Shampoo and Conditioner: Must-Haves for All
Shampoo and conditioner are the basic haircare products that everyone should be using. The shampoo is imperative for maintaining your hygiene and conditioner provides essential moisturizing to help rejuvenate your locks after the cleansing.
There is a lot of debate on whether salon-grade or store-bought shampoos and conditioners are better. In this case, quality doesn’t matter as much as the content. Store brands often contain sulfates and other similar chemicals that are considered “harsh” and can cause skin irritation and dryness. The differences are even more pronounced in specialized products. Those require some ingredients that will be very low-grade if cheap.
Therefore, if your hair requires some special treatment, you should be looking into professional brands that focus on those issues, like Fanola No Yellow for keeping the colour of bleached hair or Olaplex for restructuring and rebuilding extremely damaged hair. However, if your budget is tight and your hair is healthy, you can stick to high-quality store-grade brands if they don’t contain any nasty chemicals.
Deep Conditioning Treatments, Oils, and Serums: Use When Needed
There are specialized types of products today that are designed specifically to help damaged hair recover or to strengthen it in some specific way. These are the products where the grade matters, so purchasing options formulated for professional use makes sense. However, those are also not cheap, so you should choose what to buy with care.
When it comes to professional-grade hair serums and oils, you should consider using them when you have a specific major issue, such as hair damage after colouring or hair loss. Note that light serums are also great for adding shine to your locks. These products are best used after colouring because this is when your tresses need more than the regular shampoo and conditioner combo. Oils, in particular, are effective to use during hair recovery programs.

Deep conditioning treatments, on the other hand, are best used after bleaching or on natural hair. That’s because these products are most effective for extremely dry locks or those that can turn this way without special care (natural hair).
Note that if you aren’t dealing with some extreme cases, you can make deep conditioning treatments yourself. Also, you can use your hair oil (mentioned above) for at-home treatment. You’ll need to apply it on slightly wet hair, wrap it in a towel, and heat it all up with a hairdryer. Leave for 20-30 minutes before washing off.
However, if your hair is very weakened or damaged, it would be best to use professional-grade deep conditioning treatments that contain chemicals, which will rebuild the very structure of your locks.
Hair Masks: For Occasional Use by Everyone
Hair masks don’t have such a potent effect as oils, serums, and deep conditioning treatments. However, they provide more care to your locks than a regular conditioner. It’s best to use them once every week or two, depending on the condition of your hair.
Usually, it’s recommended that you use a mask by the same brand as your shampoo and conditioner. However, this isn’t mandatory, so just use what works best for you and feel free to experiment.
Also, don’t forget that you can make hair masks yourself using products from your pantry. This way, you’ll be able to make sure your hair care product is 100% natural. Also, this will allow you to discover which ingredients work best for you personally.
In Conclusion
The haircare industry might be releasing new products every other week, but this doesn’t mean you have to use all of them. Consider your budget and only buy what’s truly necessary.

This is a great post, really enjoyed reading it! I always try to spend a little extra on the hair products since I feel it deserves a bit of luxury, but I know that it is not necessary just something I like to spend my money on! Thanks for sharing xx

This is really helpful. It can be tough to know whether you absolutely need to buy those haircare products that are being recommended or not – I used to buy a lot of hair masks constantly but realised I didn’t need to, only when I felt my hair needed it.

I have to admit that I don’t really bother with products for me hair these days, I don’t go out enough to use them

I’ve never really fallen into the trap of buying 101 things for my hair. For me, I simply use shampoo.

I’ve not used shampoo for over 2 years. I follow a method called ‘curly girl’ and, having curly hair, it has worked wonders for me. I agree that you don’t need to try every product out there. Once you find something your hair likes, stick with it!
