Looking back at each decade, I feel both ‘older’ and ‘younger’, I see the change in my features, the change in my way of life, the change in my personality and the experience itched on my face. I am grateful for the life I have lived thus far and excited for the life I am yet to live.

2026 - 39, (Home, England), I am ready for this final year before my 40s but also ready for this next decade.
2016 - 29, (Oslo, Norway), this decade was about self discovery and building the life I dreamt about. The life that I am super proud of and truly grateful to be living. This decade, I built my financial life and in later years choose to heal from the trauma gained in the last decade and now I feel well equipped for the future.
2006 - 19, (Glasgow, Scotland), I thought I was grown (look at the cheekbones 🤣🤣) and ready for the world, chiiiild was I wrong, let’s just say, I am still resolving the trauma the decade brought me but I am grateful because I met my best friends and made decisions for the future I wanted to have. (Spoiler alert - I did better than I dreamed).
1996 - 9, (Home, Zambia) this was my birthday but my little sister insisted she had to be the one in the middle. The only way we knew whose birthday it was, was by standing in the middle but this year I remember baby sister crying her eyes out and refusing 🤨
1988 - 9 months, (Chililabombwe, Zambia) although my mother looks tired and traumatised😟, I know I was loved and happy.

4 Fun Ways to Use Spare Annual Leave

As the year draws to a close, you might find yourself staring at a few leftover holiday days. It can feel a bit like time’s running out, but don’t stress – you don’t have to take a long, drawn-out break to make the most of them. There are plenty of ways to recharge without using up all your leave at once. Whether you’re craving a change of scenery or just a bit of spontaneity, here are some ideas to help you use up your remaining days in a meaningful way.

Fun ways to use spare annual leave

Take a Local Mini-Break

You don’t need to travel far to get away from it all. Look for nearby towns or attractions you’ve yet to explore. A quiet afternoon in a new neighbourhood or a short visit to a nearby nature reserve can offer a much-needed change of pace. Choosing a destination close to home allows you to relax without the stress of long travel. You’ll return feeling refreshed and inspired, having experienced something new without a long journey.

Extend a Weekend into a Long Trip

Already planning a weekend getaway? Why not add a couple of extra days to it? If you can work around public holidays or just take a few extra days off, you’ll enjoy an extended break without the need for major planning. By stretching a weekend into a longer holiday, you can make the most of your time away. Whether it’s exploring the local area or simply unwinding, a few extra days will help you feel properly rested and more able to tackle the months ahead.

Try Something New or Creative

Use your remaining days to try something new that you’ve always wanted to do but never had time for. Whether it’s learning to bake or picking up a new musical instrument, investing your holiday in a creative pursuit can be a rewarding way to spend your time. Engaging in new activities stimulates your mind and can leave you with a sense of accomplishment. You’ll feel revitalised by the challenge and might even discover a new hobby to continue after your holiday ends.

Enjoy a Spontaneous Mid-Week Escape

If you’re looking for something a little more impulsive, consider a last-minute holiday mid-week. Away from the crowds of the weekend, you can enjoy a more peaceful trip, and weekdays are often cheaper too. Take a short trip to a nearby city or spend the day at a quiet retreat. The spontaneity of a mid-week escape lets you get away from your routine and return feeling refreshed without the stress of planning a big expedition.

Embrace the Freedom of Flexibility

As the year winds down, don’t let your unused leave go to waste. Instead, see it as an opportunity to carve out moments of joy or personal growth without the pressure of taking a long break. By approaching your remaining days with a flexible mindset, you can end the year feeling refreshed and ready to take on whatever comes next. So, why not make your last few days count in a way that feels both rejuvenating and rewarding?
