7 European Cities To Visit During Winter

With winter fast approaching, everyone I am sure is making plans for where they shall spend their winter holidays. I for one, I am looking close to home and have been thinking about what European cities to visit during winter. Last winter, I chose to go galavanting in Gdansk, Poland and this year I am thinking maybe embarking on simple winter log cabin holidays in the snow.

Those who know me, know that I am not big on winter and 90% of the time I am off searching for the best spots for winter sun. But this year, I am thinking of embracing the cold and searching for somewhere I can enjoy the harshness of winter whilst sipping on some mulled wine. I have compiled a list of seven European cities to visit during winter and hope this list will be motivational to those who avoid travelling during winter.

Winter travel is one of my most favourite time to travel especially around Europe because it is not only less crowded but much cheaper too. During winter I find that it’s much easier to get close to the locals as well as see how they celebrate the festive season. This is why I recommend the following European cities to visit during winter.

Whenever I think about travelling across Europe during Winter, I am always reminded of the movies of cute English countrysides or obscure little European towns. As the winter festivities get closer and closer, the European cities that I recommend to visit during winter include those that have the best Christmas markets as well as the best skiing slopes.

Nuremberg, Germany

The city of Nuremberg is one that is betrayed by its history but at the same time, such a beautiful part of Germany. When the winter sets in, it gets transformed into a winter wonderland and hosts one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. If there was one Christmas market that I would recommend, it is that of Nuremberg.

Innsbruck, Austria

Innsbruck is the 5th largest city in Austria and is considered the winter sports paradise famous with skiers, skaters and snowboarders. The two-time host of the winter Olympics is tucked away in the Alps but that’s not all there is to see, the city is a combination of world-famous sights with post-modern architecture. If you’re looking for somewhere to hit the slopes but also include a winter break then Innsbruck is the place.

Krakow, Poland

The city of Krakow is one of the oldest and second-largest cities in the country and once upon a time was the capital of Poland. Krakow is another city that hosts the best Christmas market and is famous for the grzaniec {mulled wine}. The city is not only pretty during the summer months but even more inviting during the winter months.

Prague, Czechia

Prague is a beautiful all year round and though the winter months are not my favourite, winter in Prague is slightly different. With fresh snow on the ground, the city hums to a different tune that brings people together. The Christmas markets are nothing special but they are definitely where you want to be for the mulled wine.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Whenever I think about the city of Reykjavik, I think of Northern Lights and geothermal swimming pools. Can you imagine, dipping into a geothermal pool when the temperatures and below freezing but still being absolutely relaxed and warm? If you’re looking for the perfect winter city break, the capital of Iceland and the largest city in the country should be high on your light.

Lapland, Finland

Lapland is the northernmost region in Finland and borders with three other countries and the Baltic Sea. Whenever I think of Lapland I am reminded of Santa Claus town, a place close and dear to my heart that I hope to one day explore. This region of Finland is not only famous for the Northern Lights but the midnight sun too, a natural phenomenon I would love to experience.

Copenhagen, Denmark

Copenhagen during winter is one of the cosiest cities in Europe thanks to the Danish concept of Hyyge. In Denmark, Hyyge is a way of life and during the winter months, it is greatly encouraged. I find the concept very inviting, who wouldn’t want to sit down with the neighbours and enjoy hot drinks, exploring your surroundings and relaxing? I think Copenhagen is the best winter city if you’re looking for a more relaxing winter break, somewhere you can recharge.

I am excited to be planning my winter destination and the places I have mentioned above are where I am looking to spend my winter break. Whilst I am not a fan of the cold, mulled wines, cosy lodges and Christmas markets makes it worthwhile.
