Sticks’n’Sushi is a fusion of two traditions; Japanese and Danish, both of which are known for their relaxed approach on life. The chain was created over 22 years ago by two brothers who combined their two heritage to create incredibly mouth-watering dishes. The food is of high quality, fresh and based on a unique combination of sushi and yakitori sticks from the grill.
What I loved about the menu is how comprehensive it was, the name can be deceptive. It is not all sushi, they serve chicken, beef, pork and vegetable dishes all made fresh to order.
Whilst Sticks’n’Sushi is new to Oxford, it is no stranger to London where it has several branches as well as in Cambridge. The Oxford brand of the 17th branch with several in Denmark and one in Germany. From its inception Sticks’n’Sushi has struck gold is very popular on the Danish gourmet scene. It is easy to see why, from the design of the restaurants to the investment into its employees.

The Ambiance
Prior to our arrival, we had made a reservation for 8pm, we arrived a few minutes before and we were warmly welcomed. From the moment we entered the Oxford branch, throughout our meal until leaving we were star struck. The design of the entire place is so welcoming and relaxing, it caters to soloist, ‘trendsetters’ and families too.
What I loved is they offer great reading material instead of your everyday magazine or newspaper. I was really touched because often I am alone and it would be awesome to have some great reading material. The entire ambiance was romantic, relaxing and perfect for date nights of all sorts.
The yummy and delicious food
Where shall I begin! Well I guess from the beginning.
Even now as I write this article I am still salivating just thinking about the yummy and delicious foods we ate. The menu is so extensive but very inclusive too, we both felt we have eaten enough sushi so we were for different. Don’t get me wrong, we love sushi and we will be going back for it, but for this night somehow a salad was what we wanted. My girl date ordered the Fish Salad and I went for the Four wings which was chicken, duck, egg and more.
Our original thinking was a salad is never filling and we would probably be looking for MacD later. So we decided to have a starter with our meal; I chose EBI bites and my date chose scallops. Little did we know not only will we enjoy the starters so much but the salad would come in a huge bowl. It would be full to the top so much that we would take some home in the nicest doggie bag ever.
Delicious Sticks’n’Sushi style dessert.
Now, we might have been full and felt stuffed from the starter and main but we still had room for dessert. I don’t know about you but I have two stomachs; one for starter and main and another just for dessert. To say we were excited for the dessert would be an understatement; we could not wait to try it all. But alas the budget didn’t allow us to eat it all instead tried majority of the menus of offer.
What I especially loved was the desserts served in small dessert bowls very Japanese like and very cute. You have an option to either just have one of these small bowls or get 3 for £9, which is what we did. Let me tell you it was the best dessert ever and we can not recommend it enough. I can still taste it now, I want that vanilla ice cream again and I don’t care that it’s winter.
The Service
From the moment we were shown to our seats, we received the most amazing service. The waiting staff was truly attentive, gave us some great suggestions on drinks and explained what was in the drinks. I don’t think we had a moment when staff wasn’t checking we had all we needed, they ensured our water glasses where never empty.
It was nicely chatting to them all, they had great suggestions and recommendations. The entire atmosphere was welcoming and they seemed like a real relaxing team who looked out for one another.
The Price
Now I am always the first to moan about how expensive meals for two have become these days. By the end of our date night, the dent in our combined wallet was just over £100 with optional service charge added. For the kind of service we received, it would have been wrong not to pay the optional service charge. For us this was quite expensive but so totally worth it and we will be doing it again. The food was out of this world delicious, service was really second to none and the ambiance was everything perfect. We had an incredible evening, it’s our second last date night thanks Sticks’n’Sushi.
Final thoughts
Just look at the design of the restaurant, the big smiles on the face of the staff and the atmosphere. What you will see and experience is pure bliss, the food is one for the books and the ambiance excellent. We had an incredible time, we chatted like tomorrow would never come.
Sticks’n’Sushi is a place I highly recommend, definitely worth 5* designation on my book.

Ok, Japanese and Danish? What a combination and it looks you really enjoyed your meal so I guess the fusion of Japanese and Danish works. That combination is definitely not some generic pairing as both cuisines are such vastly different cuisines.

I love the interior and the decor looks really chic, funny thing is I don’t like eating sushi but always keep trying to do it. I guess it’s the whole idea of raw fish that runs through my mind either way I will keep on looking for the ones that I will end up liking.

That’s the beauty about Sitcks’n’Sushi, its not all sushi, they have several different options to cater to everyone’s needs
