Lagos Portugal Weekend Escape | Winter Adventures

Lagos is a coastal city located in the western coastline of the Algarve region in Portugal. As part of the Winter Adventures to Faro, I managed to include a Lagos Portugal Weekend Escape. The city of Lagos is filled with bustling nightlife, impressive cliffs and the best sandy beaches in Algarve.

The city of Lagos in Portugal is not to be confused with the Nigerian capital in Western Africa. Lagos is not only home to the best beaches in Western Algarve but a charming historical centre too. The city is located ~2.5 hours away from Faro and an extra 40 minutes from Tavira.

I was happy to include a Lagos Portugal Weekend Escape even though it wasn’t part of the itinerary. To be honest, I had no proper itinerary for Algarve apart from making the most of the visit. Our Lagos Portugal Weekend Escape guide covers all the things we did during this day trip.

Lagos Portugal Weekend Escape

Lagos is one of the most popular touristy destinations in the western region of Algarve. The popularity is due to the incredible cliffs and beaches lining the coastline of the city. We were fortunate that even though our visit was in winter, the weather was summery. Our hope is that the Lagos Portugal Weekend Escape guide will be a useful resource as you embark on visiting Lagos.

Ponta da Piedade

Ponta da Piedade is a group of rock formations that are said to give the Western Algarve region its beauty. Though the cliffs love quite high, there is a stair case which we took to reach the water. I highly recommend visiting this area even if your visit to Lagos is a short one.null

Ponta da Piedade Lighthouse

Thought to have been erected in 1913, the lighthouse is located near the Ponta de Piedade beach. The lighthouse can be seen from most areas on the coastal line of Lagos.

Praia Dona Ana

Praia Dona Ana is the most beautiful beach in Lagos, it offers access to crystal-clear water and gorgeous sandy beaches. The beach is popular with the locals and tourists alike for its proximity to the city.

Praia do Camilo

To reach Praia do Camilo you need to hike down the 200 wooden steps and though very exhausting, its so worth it. What we found out only when we reached the beach is that beach is separated by two separate. They are connected by a tunnel and gives such an incredible experience. 

Porto de Mós

This beach is located 4 kilometres away from Lagos and offers 3 kilometres of sandy beaches. Instead of taking a bus to reach this beach, we walked for over 30 minutes. We highly recommend doing this as from up to the view is incomparable.

Meia Praia

Meia Praia is a spacious, golden-sand beach set amid rocky cliffs and the most popular beach in Lagos. The horse-shaped beach is a mere 4 minutes walk from the city center making it ideal location.

Praia da Batata

Praia da Batata is another beach close to the town centre of Lagos, it is popular and gorgeous. The beach is filled with various infrastructure and is famous for kayaking.

Pinhao Beach

Pinhao beach is a hidden gem tucked under steep ochre cliffs on the Lagos coastline. What we loved was that it was secluded, towering yellow cliffs and such clear water.

Lagos lots more to offer than beaches but they are the most visited places in the city. Other places that we visited during our day trip included

• Castle of Lagos – medieval castle located close to the coast
• Igreja de Santo António – a church and Portuguese National Monument.
• Museu Municipal Dr José Formosinho – museum covering the entire city’s history 

We also managed to walk in the narrow streets of the city and grab something to eat near the marina. I can not recommend the city enough and not just the beaches but the historical town centre too. One thing that we highly recommend is booking a boat ride, we book Fleet who was just incredible.
