Looking back at each decade, I feel both ‘older’ and ‘younger’, I see the change in my features, the change in my way of life, the change in my personality and the experience itched on my face. I am grateful for the life I have lived thus far and excited for the life I am yet to live.

2026 - 39, (Home, England), I am ready for this final year before my 40s but also ready for this next decade.
2016 - 29, (Oslo, Norway), this decade was about self discovery and building the life I dreamt about. The life that I am super proud of and truly grateful to be living. This decade, I built my financial life and in later years choose to heal from the trauma gained in the last decade and now I feel well equipped for the future.
2006 - 19, (Glasgow, Scotland), I thought I was grown (look at the cheekbones 🤣🤣) and ready for the world, chiiiild was I wrong, let’s just say, I am still resolving the trauma the decade brought me but I am grateful because I met my best friends and made decisions for the future I wanted to have. (Spoiler alert - I did better than I dreamed).
1996 - 9, (Home, Zambia) this was my birthday but my little sister insisted she had to be the one in the middle. The only way we knew whose birthday it was, was by standing in the middle but this year I remember baby sister crying her eyes out and refusing 🤨
1988 - 9 months, (Chililabombwe, Zambia) although my mother looks tired and traumatised😟, I know I was loved and happy.

Random acts of kindness {+ Infographic by Oxfam}

Random acts of kindness are actions performed by an individual or individuals without expecting anything back. Anyone can perform an act of kindness provided it’s given freely with no expectation of praise. Everyday we read or hear something about random acts of kindness performed all the time. This time of year many people take time to reflect on their lives and are thankful for what they have. Often this leads to now wanting to give back to the community or maybe donating to charity.

There is no act of kindness that is measured to be greater than the other, its all about the intention. If you’re giving expecting something back in return then you’re not giving wholeheartedly. Anyone can give back to the community whether its money or their time. Regardless, it is about what you can give freely without expecting anything back in return.

random acts of kindnessPersonal Experience of Random Acts of Kindness

I was 18 when I decided to ditch my parent’s advice and go see a boyfriend, ah days of teenage love. He had promised he would drive me back home otherwise I wouldn’t have gone. When the time came for him to take me home, he decided to pick up a shift at work instead. He ditched me at the station in a city I had never been to nor knew anyone. To make matters worse, I had no money to get money and no credit to call my parents.

On a normal day, I would have done my self risk assessment before going with the ex-boyfriend. But this time, my hormones decided before I could and I found myself in a tough spot. Not knowing what to do I started walking aimlessly to the direction of the station. It is where I bumped into a man whose face to this day I do not know all I remember is light.

He saw the pain and tears on my face and stopped to speak to me, I wanted to tell the WHOLE truth but lied. Regardless this random man helped me, he bought me an expensive ticket and food. He bid me good day and to this day I am eternally grateful to this unknown man. Not once did he ask for anything in return, he just performed a random act of kindness.

random acts of kindnessHow you can get involved!

This time of year many people love to give back, not to be seen but because they want to. And the acts of kindness your perform can be as simple as, re-tweeting someone’s message. Buying the next round of drinks for your friends or work colleagues. What’s important is your perform the act wholeheartedly without any expectation of reciprocation.

We are collaborating with Oxfam this year to share this message of ‘acts of kindness’. This incredible infographic shows how you can get involved.

    This is a brilliant idea particularly at this time of the year. I will definitely be taking part in this virtuous act.

    Random acts of kindness is what the Christmas season is all about. Though obviously great at other times of year too!

    This is so lovely. And it just goes to show how something that can seem so small to some can mean the world to others.

    Aww that’s absolutely a beautiful idea. Random acts of kindness stay with you long after . You’re story is lovely, I’ve no doubt you’ll never forget this man and what he done for you . I am very lucky to have had such kind people cross my path too , I remember passing out at church once , I had told my dad I was too unwell to attend but he insisted I go to church . I passed out and a lovely woman walked me all the way home and told my dad that next time it’s best to believe me when I say I’m unwell. She was very kind and wouldn’t hear of leaving me walk home alone . It’s stayed with me all these years later . X
