Then look no further than our 2-day itinerary filled with the best things to do in Stockholm as well as a suggestion on the best places to eat. Our recent visit to the Swedish capital was my 2nd visit, but even then I still found myself learning more about the city. There is never a dull moment in Stockholm, with over 50 bridges and 14 islands covering the archipelago, the city has a lot to offer the visitors.

Stockholm is an international city which is served by 3 airports and has a great transport connection with the rest of the Scandinavian countries and beyond. Sweden is known for being a cash-less country so much that some establishments like hostels and restaurants go as far as refusing cash payments. Our Stockholm Travel Guide aims to educate you on Stockholm whilst sharing tips and tricks on how to navigate its popular sites. We hope that this itinerary will be useful especially to the budget travellers who want to extend their buck.

STOCKHOLM TRAVEL GUIDE | THINGS TO DO

Stockholm is one of the most versatile cities I have ever had the pleasure of visiting, during the first visit I was shell shocked by how cold the city was for Spring. Even then I was truly impressed by the architecture of the city especially in the old town where some of its buildings were built in the 1700s. I was excited to return to this cashless city in Autumn and the autumnal colours were absolutely mesmerising.

The city of Stockholm is both vast and easy to navigate, I would recommend buying a Stockholm city pass. It’s worth the money and the only city card that I have bought that includes tour buses and boats during warmer weather. With the city pass, you can gain access to museums and various attractions for no extra cost to you. If you only have 2-days in the city, there a few places that I recommend checking out.

Gamla Stan

A beautiful place to explore with so many churches but my favourite is the Royal Palace. I loved the cobblestone streets, the medieval feel and look of the old town and overall peaceful area. It is definitely a must-visit when in Stockholm as I feel to understand Stockholm you have to visit Gamla Stan.

The Royal Palace

The official residence of the Swedish Monarch and used for many official Royal functions. It is such a beautiful palace and lovely that you can walk outside it fairly easily. It’s very relaxing building but architecturally beautiful too.

The Royal Opera

The Opera is located in the borough of Norrmalm in the centre of the city near the river banks, it is still home to ballet and opera. Whilst I did not manage to visit the inside, it is still one of the places that I hope to visit inside one day.

Kungstradgarden {Shopping District}

Whenever I have visited the shopping district, I have always been drawn to the park and how quaint it is. During autumn, it is not only colourful but popular with the locals and tourists alike. It is situated near the Royal opera and not too far from all the top department stores.

City Hall

Everyone is familiar with the Nobel Prize, in Stockholm’s city hall, it is where the dinner is held and is home to the most exclusive ballrooms in the city. On my next visit, I want to spend more time exploring this part of the city including the city hall.

HOW TO NAVIGATE STOCKHOLM

When it comes to public transport, Stockholm has one of the best systems in the world. But it is wise to remember that Stockholm like the rest of the Scandinavian countries can be quite expensive. A single ticket from Skavsta airport to the city centre is £15 (179kr) {return is £27}, this airport is over 60 miles away from the city. The other two airports are Arlanda 35 miles away and Bromma which is 6 miles away. Low fare airlines like Ryanair fly into Skavsta other major airlines fly more into Arlanda than Bromma.

We flew into Skavsta with Ryanair, the flight lasted 2.5 hours and the journey from the airport was over 1hr 30 minutes. Trains are another option but you need to travel to Nykoping central station which is about 7 miles away from Skavsta airport. With Arlanda airport, there is better train access as well as other public transport. Then with Bromma, there is only a bus (112) which is available all day and it runs every 20 minutes.

WHERE TO STAY & EAT IN STOCKHOLM

The first time I visited Stockholm, I was taken around the city and ate at various establishments but could not remember the names for the life of me. On this occasion, we chose to eat in the old town and found a few cute restaurants that I would highly recommend. We ate at Restaurang Misteln an Italian restaurant which services various delicacies. We chose the meatballs & mashed potatoes served with cream sauce and lingonberries, best Swedish dish ever.

When it comes to choosing where to stay, it all depends on your budget, on both visits I chose to stay at the Generator Hostel. I highly recommend this hostel, it’s such an incredible chain, the rooms are not only cheap and comfortable but affordable too. If hostels are not for you then may I recommend a budget hotel, Elite Palace Hotel or Hotel Esplanade which is a mid-range hotel.

On my next adventure to the Swedish capital, I am hoping to explore the Subway art, Vasa museum and lesser-known parts of the city. As much as I love visiting popular city destinations, I think it is also important to explore the lesser-known parts of a city.
