The Art of Expression: Celebrating the Work of Tattoo Fanatics

It’s difficult to think of a more timeless form of expression than tattooing. It really does represent an essential element of identity for the great numbers of people around the world who choose to embrace this ancient art.

Whether you’re reading this as an artist who is skilled and seasoned in the creation of tattoos, or even merely a casual fan or admirer, you might be interested to know about the variety of ways in which tattoos can be celebrated.

So, we decided to put the magnifying glass on that very subject. Below, we have explored some of the principal ways in which this time-honoured art of expression has – and continues to be – shared and celebrated around the globe.

What Are Tattoos, And How Are They Created?

Before we delve deeper into the art of tattooing, it is essential to make clear what tattoos are. Tattoos are an ancient art form, featuring designs that are made by inserting ink into the dermis layer of the skin. They can be as simple or complex as desired, and they often serve as an expression of identity, or as a reminder of a significant event in someone’s life.

Tattoos are added to the body using a needle, and ink, dyes, and pigments are added to the dermis of the skin, to form a specific design or image. Both tattoo machines and hand needle options are used to deposit the ink, depending on the preferences and style of the artist, as well as the tradition in which the tattoo is being added to the skin.

Introducing The Main Tattoo Styles

As you will probably know from having merely noticed tattoos down the years, tattoos come in a wide range of different styles. So, how can you begin to make sense of them?

To help you, below, we have outlined some of the most popular tattoo styles that you are likely to have seen.

  • Traditional

Tattoos that can be described as relatively “traditional” in their look, are distinguished by clear, bold lines and bright, traditional colours. These tattoos will usually feature traditional images and designs such as animals, flowers, or symbols.

One reason why many people are drawn to traditional tattoos is their design versatility. You could choose to have a large and intricate traditional tattoo, or something much smaller and simpler. It all comes down to what aesthetic you desire for your tattoo.

  • Neo Traditional

As the name suggests, these are tattoos that add a modern twist to more classic, traditional designs. Relative to traditional designs, neo-traditional tattoos tend to feature softer curves, unique tones, and gentle shading, effectively “updating” existing, familiar motifs.

  • Tribal Designs

Again, the name of this style is fairly self-explanatory. These types of tattoo designs draw upon traditional tribal symbols and designs, and members of a certain tribe or group may choose to have a specific tattoo design on their bodies in order to identify themselves as belonging to that particular group or alliance.

  • Blackwork

Blackwork tattoos are a type of tattoo that uses solid black ink, and bold, clear lines. These tattoos are typically clear and bold, with strong, geometric patterns and delicate, intricate patterns made up of skilled linework.

The lack of colour in these tattoos means they can be considered more elegant and sophisticated than some other types out there. This makes them a popular choice of tattoo for those looking for a more subtle, understated look.

How Are Tattoos Celebrated?

Now that we have taken a closer look at the different types and styles of tattoos, it is time to consider the ways in which they are celebrated and shared with the wider world. There are a number of ways that this is achieved, including:

  • Tattoo Conventions

Tattoo conventions are becoming increasingly popular. They offer artists a chance to showcase their work and talent, as well as to network with other artists, while clients and tattoo fans have a chance to observe and learn, and may even get a tattoo of their own.

  • Tattoo Competitions

Tattoo competitions are another way to celebrate this unique art form. These contests entail artists submitting their work to be judged and to possibly win cash prizes. A tattoo competition can also present the chance for artists to enjoy increased exposure, which can lead to a higher amount of business and a great reputation.

  • Sharing On Social Media

Over the years, online social networks have become an ever-more entrenched part of many of our lives. To this day, they represent excellent platforms for sharing tattoo art and connecting with other tattoo fanatics.

There are various popular Instagram accounts dedicated to tattoos. Artists have long used image-oriented social networks to showcase their work and to receive feedback from peers, and this can be a very effective way to connect with fans and potential customers.

  • Tattoo Inspired Clothing

Another common option to celebrate and share tattoos is through tattoo-inspired clothing. Such apparel, from brands such as Broken Society, typically features a variety of styles and imitations of tattoos, allowing wearers to enjoy the art without a permanent body modification.

  • National Tattoo Day

Did you know that 17th July is celebrated by many in America as “National Tattoo Day”? Although this is still currently an unofficial observance rather than a formally organised event, it is marked as a time to honour the art of tattooing and to recognise the amazing work of tattoo artists.

Many people use this day to show off their tattoos or to get new ones, as well as to celebrate their individual style of expression. Unsurprisingly, then, many events are often held at this time of year to celebrate the truly remarkable art form that is tattooing.

Perhaps when 17th July next rolls around for you, then, it could be worth seeing whether there are any interesting National Tattoo Day events taking place near where you live. If tattooing is something you’re intrigued by or becoming increasingly passionate about, you’re unlikely to regret it!
