Looking back at each decade, I feel both ‘older’ and ‘younger’, I see the change in my features, the change in my way of life, the change in my personality and the experience itched on my face. I am grateful for the life I have lived thus far and excited for the life I am yet to live.

2026 - 39, (Home, England), I am ready for this final year before my 40s but also ready for this next decade.
2016 - 29, (Oslo, Norway), this decade was about self discovery and building the life I dreamt about. The life that I am super proud of and truly grateful to be living. This decade, I built my financial life and in later years choose to heal from the trauma gained in the last decade and now I feel well equipped for the future.
2006 - 19, (Glasgow, Scotland), I thought I was grown (look at the cheekbones 🤣🤣) and ready for the world, chiiiild was I wrong, let’s just say, I am still resolving the trauma the decade brought me but I am grateful because I met my best friends and made decisions for the future I wanted to have. (Spoiler alert - I did better than I dreamed).

The Perfect Housewarming Gifts for New Homeowners

PR Sample

With Christmas fast approaching, I thought what would make the perfect housewarming gifts for new homeowners for people like myself who recently became homeowners (aka all the money went to the house)? When I bought my first home at the beginning of the year, I must admit there we more costs than I initially thought and I wish someone had warned me upfront.

Buying a house, a flat and even an apartment can cause a huge dent on your finances especially if you did budget properly. But even then, there is always some unexpected expenses and this has made me thing about those first-time buyers this Christmas and what would be the perfect housewarming gifts for new homeowners. I know exactly what I want for Christmas this year.

The Perfect Housewarming Gifts for New Homeowners

Back when I was renting, I always thought about what I would like to receive as a housewarming gift and even more, what would I buy first. It turns out my habits as a renter as not changed even as a homeowner, the first thing I bought when renting was a TV and its the same thing I did when I bought my first home. So, I was thinking selfishly about what I would love to receive as a new homeowner, it would be all expensive electronics. 😂😂

For your everyday Jane and Jo, they have there prioritise right and will think of something useful and something they can use in the long run. The list I have compiled of the perfect housewarming gifts for new homeowners is not extensive but does include things I know every new homeowner would love and appreciate big time and things that I personally would have loved receiving when I first bought my home.

Housewarming Gift: Gift Card or Money

I don’t know about you but my bank did take a slight hit when I bought my first home but thankfully I had planned ahead – bought essential things that I needed and had saved up a bit more than your average Joe. But nonetheless less, gift cards to my favourite homeware store and a supermarket was greatly appreciated and I know others would feel the same. Not everyone is comfortable receiving money as gifts so I recommend a gift card but again its better to ask them than to assume as you never know people’s financial situation.

New Homeowner Gifts: Beddings and Pillows

Over the last couple of years, I have acquired an expensive taste for beddings and pillows, I have bought from a few luxury brands and I have absolutely the items. Don’t get me wrong there are some other luxury brands I have bought from and didn’t need to be worth the price I paid this is why I always go back to my favourites. Recently I was introduced to a new brand called Terry’s Fabrics and ordered their *pink bedding which is absolutely lush. I am a sucker for colourful beddings and most often plain beddings give me a sense of peace and calmness, thinking about it, I need more beddings.

Personalised Utensils

Is it just me or do personalised gifts just make everything perfect? Since I was young, I have always loved things with my name of them, it meant that is mine and no one else’s since my name is not that common. When I left home and started renting my own place, I was excited to buy utensils with my initials engraved on them. I even had an apron with name plastered all over it as well as two sets of nightwear imprinted with my first names and the second pair with my initials. When it comes to utensils, my favourite spatula, wooden spoons, mugs and even cereal bowls are engraved.

Wall Art, Prints and Plants

I have always loved the idea of displaying art and prints around my home and the first thing people notice about my living room is my wall art and prints. Personally, wall art is an accessory that can make or break your home aesthetics. I don’t claim to be an expert but my living room feels more complete with the art that I have displayed across the room. Its arts and prints that resonates with who I am, an African, a Woman and a traveller. Another thing people notice about my home is my collection of plants, I don’t even know when I became a plant mum but I love all my plants.

Personalized Home Plaques or Key Holders

One of my most favourite gifts that my close friends got me was a personalised hey holder with the date I moved into my home and a little house hanging off it. It was the sweetest thought ever and even now I smile when I look at it, it’s just the perfect little gift ever. For my other friends, I have previously bought the house plaques with either their street name or just the house number. When it comes to personalized items for the home, you can go crazy with what you can choose from various websites and stores.

Positive Affirmation Messages

Again, I am not someone who will wait to buy me these, I love affirmation messages so I bought a lot on my travels and they are displayed around my home. I love positive affirmations and one of my favourite that hangs in my living room for so long and now is in my kitchen is, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, its about learning to dance in the rain” I can not even remember where I bought it but it truly speaks to me on a deeper level. Another one hanging in my living room reads, “when you love what you have, you have everything” and I honestly believe I have everything.

Wine, Champagne and Chocolates are welcome too

I know that wines, champagne and chocolates are the most common gifts but do not overlook them. I have received so many wonderful wines and Champagnes that I am still not ready to open whilst others were opened on day one. When it comes to chocolate though, I have zero will power and often eat those first before I even start on the wine. I wouldn’t object to receiving biscuits either because who doesn’t look a good shortbread biscuit to dip into your hot chocolate or tea in my case?

With Christmas fast approaching, I thought what would make the perfect housewarming gifts for new homeowners for people like myself who recently became homeowners (aka all the money went to the house)? When I bought my first home at the beginning of the year, I must admit there we more costs than I initially thought and I wish someone had warned me upfront.

Flowers are Important too

There is something about giving flowers that warms up people’s hearts and I always feel that way when I receive flowers. I know not everyone has the spare funds to gift expensive housewarming gifts but don’t neglect flowers, they are also a great gift. I think flowers whether fresh or plastic, they make a great addition to one’s home.

I am a sucker for fresh flowers and every other week I buy fresh flowers from the local flower shop but most times from the supermarkets. When I moved it, the first thing I bought once I organised my things was to buy flowers for my living room and kitchen. I always think flowers always add extra oomph and freshness to the home.

There are many other gifts that you can give to new homeowners, you are not limited to the above, the sky is the limit. I would also recommend candles, salt/pepper shakers, doormats, side tables, bedside lamps, home albums or even a wall clock. What are some of the housewarming gifts you would recommend?
