Prom night might seem a mile away at this stage of the year, making it seem like procrastination is an option. Why not wait until later, a little closer to the time, before you start rooting around for the perfect prom dress. Well there are a few good reasons why. Limited stock, price changes, and of course, the sheer stress of faffing around at the last minute to find the outfit that is right for you. These things take time, so honestly, it is best not to leave it until later on.
The ordering process
One thing that tends to slip the mind of prom dress shoppers, is how long the process of ordering can take. While a lot of dresses are kept in storage and can be delivered in just about no time, it often happens that special orders can take anywhere between four and twelve weeks to come through, which means that if you leave it too late, you might only end up getting your dress after prom night, which doesn’t help anyone. Doing it this way means that any orders on lovely prom dresses , will come in 2016.
If you need to make alterations
Alright, so if you can bet on getting your dress in time, does it mean that you can wait a little longer before making the order? Well, no. You may find that certain alterations need to be made to the dress to accommodate your body type. Everyone is different, and dresses come in standard sizes which means that there is a chance you will need to get it altered. You really don’t want to rush this process, so it is a good idea to give whoever is completing the changes a bit of time to do it. Getting your dress early means that you will be able to deal with any changes that need to be made in good time, so that the job doesn’t end up looking rushed.
Get the first pick
The early bird gets the worm, trite but true in every sense. So you want to avoid a situation where you can’t get hold of a dress that you’ve fallen in love with because the shop doesn’t want to double-sell it. Most dress sellers keep a record of who (and from which school) has bought a dress for the year, and they will make an effort not to sell it to others from that same school. This is to prevent the catastrophe of having two ladies in the same dress at the same party. So go get yours early and you’ll have the pick of the batch.
You can relax a little
Imagine this, it’s just two weeks away from prom night and you still can’t find a gown. You flick through endless catalogues of stylish girl’s party dresses but find nothing and ask yourself ‘why’. Well the answer is probably that you left it too late and now all the good dresses are gone. Now that is stress.
Prom night is supposed to be holistically enjoyable, and you can do without the worry of finding a suitable dress at the last minute, so start looking early on.Prom night may feel like its ages away, but believe me, it will come in a flash. Time will fly by while you deal with daily life, school, friends and relationships. So get started early and you won’t be caught out later on.

Oh, man. My 17yo has been talking about her prom dress since August. It’s not until June! Ten months of continuous “what about this one?”. Never had proms when I was a lad, and even if you did, I don’t think I would have thought about what I was wearing til a week beforehand! Life was simpler back then……… Great tips though 😀

We never had proms in the UK when I was a kid and I think that’s a shame. They are beginning to become popular now but they have gone too far the other way with kids expecting parents to fork out in excess of £1000 for the dress alone! Is there no middle ground?
