Did you know that homes lose around 30% of their energy through windows? With energy prices going up, it is even more imperative to think of ways to reduce your energy bills like installing wooden shutters would help reduce heat loss from your home. The rise in energy prices is always a topic of discussion but more so recently due to the current situation and we are paying the price. Many people are rightly concerned about the rise of energy prices on top of high inflation and are looking for ways to help reduce the energy bills as much as possible.
As a homeowner, I too have found myself searching for various ways to reduce the energy bills from installing smart meters to monitor my usage to using window covers that reduces how much energy is lost through my windows. The cost of owning a home can be quite high, as the owner, you are responsible for making your home more energy efficient. When your home is more energy efficient, you are not only ensuring your home conserves the energy when required but helps reduce the energy bill as well.

Window covering ideas to reduce your energy bills
There are many tips out there on how to reduce your energy bills and majority do cover the fact that over 30% of energy is lost through your windows hence why I decided to focus on that topic. When I was in the process of purchasing my home, one thing I looked at where the type of windows my soon to be home had. If it wasn’t double glazing, I was not interested but thankfully most homes now in the UK have double glazing installed unless it is an old building.
Installing double glazing windows is a great start to ensuring you reduce energy loss from your home but there is so much more that you can do for your windows. In this post I aim to share a couple of windows covering ideas that you can try to help reduce energy loss and in turn reduce your energy bills in the process.
Drapes: This mostly depends on the quality of the fabric used but they too can help reduce heat loss and are great for privacy as well.
Blinds: Great at reducing solar heat gain but they are also known to be great at providing you with the privacy you desire.
Shades: Great for keeping the temperate stable because they create pockets that trap air on the windows. They are good for privacy as well.

Shutters: Not only are they good for protecting your privacy, but they are also great insulators and great at controlling glare. They are perfect for summer and winter months
Window shutters are one of the most energy efficient window coverings due to a number of reasons. The first is that they’re made from durable and high-quality wooden materials which stop the cold air from entering the rooms and stop the warmth from escaping. Their design covers more of the window frame than other window coverings, and as they’re fitted within the window frames they stop the draughts from entering. Choosing window shutters will help to reduce your heating bills. And even better, DIY shutters cost 40% less than full-service installed shutters, making them an affordable option for the luxury style.
In my own home, I have drapes and blinds but now I am considering installing window shutters as they are the most energy efficient window coverings. There are many ways to help reduce your energy bills and window coverings its just one of them. How do you reduce energy loss around your home during winter months?

We had wooden shutters installed as soon as we bought our place. They help keep the place cool in summer and warmer in winter – win win!

We have blinds which are great in the winter to keep the warm air inside. I would absolutely love to get new windows, but that’s something for the future x

I rent my house so I can’t really do much when it comes to covering the windows. I do have great curtains though that do keep the heat inside during the cold months. I rarely turn the heating on upstairs.

We have 2-inch wooden blinds on every window in the house. Those are definitely my favorite look for window coverings. Then we have decorative curtains on most windows, but those don’t often get used, they are there to soften the echo in the house (all tile floors) and look nice.

I LOVE the room darkening shades. We have have shades that filter bright light but also darken the room. These are great especially in bedrooms. I like sheer curtains in other rooms. I definitely need to look at coverings that help with energy bills. That is so smart!
