10 Things to do in Stockholm is 6 weeks overdue from when I visited and returned from Stockholm. The main reason for this delay has been the fatigue that plagued me in March and April. Regardless I am happy to finally be sharing what I consider to be 10 Things to do in Stockholm. If you’re spending a weekend or less you might want check out this post for some ideas.
Can you believe I had to be reminded of what I saw and got up to whilst in Stockholm? To be totally honest I have constantly be on the move for the last 8+ weeks that my travels are starting to mess. Thank God for friends, the many phones we snap daily and taking some me time. With that I have been able to remember and relieve what I {we} got up to in Stockholm.
10 Things to do in Stockholm
Whilst I had to be reminder of some of these places, all of them are what I actually seen in Stockholm. Most of these are popular tourist attractions and others are just off the beaten path. We all know that Scandinavian countries are one of the most expensive {like REALLY expensive} countries in Europe. If you’re planning on visiting and exploring some of the famous sites then purchase a Stockholm card.
1. Gamla Stan
Every European city seems to have a ‘old town’ and Stockholm is no exception to the rule. I didn’t even know I was in Gamla Stan when one morning I just started walking from my hostel into town. It is such a beautiful place to explore with so many churches but my favourite is the Royal Palace. I loved the cobblestone streets, the medieval feel and look of the old town and overall peaceful area. It is definitely a must visit when in Stockholm as I feel to understand Stockholm you have to visit Gamla Stan.
2. ABBA Museum
It would be wrong of me to write about Stockholm and not include the ABBA Museum. Whilst it’s not a true museum in the sense of the world it does hold exhibitions of the pop group ABBA. If you’re a uber ABBA fun you could stay at Pop House Hotel which is in the same building as the museum. I missed out on exploring the museum due to the long queues.
3. Skansen – open air Museum
Skansen was opened in 1861 to showcase the different way of life in Sweden pre-industrial revolution. The weather was perfect for walking the grounds of Skansen because this ‘open air museum’ has so much to offer. I was impressed by the heavy use of wood back in the day in Sweden, practically everything was made from wood.
4. Skansen Aquarium
It is inevitable that whilst visiting Skansen you will most likely pop into the Aquarium/Zoo. It is a lovely place to visit with so many animals to see and very friendly staff. I got a fright of my life when we entered after seeing the monkeys to walk straight into the snakes area. The fear I harbor for these creatures is too much that I almost fainted but couldn’t because I was in their layer. It is definitely work the visit but be prepared to enter into the snakes layer and exist into the frogs layer.
Hours: 10am–5pm
5. SoFo {South of Folkungagatan}
All I remember avout SoFo is the amount of shops and cafes lining the streets in this Södermalm district. There is never a shortage of things to do in SoFo and is one of the most popular areas in Stockholm. Vita Bergen is a large park offering great views of the city of Stockholm. Whilst Nytorget is a city square with a playground and small park it too is a must see place.
6. king’s Garden {Kungsträdgården}
The day I visited Kungsan as it’s locally known, the sun was shinning and people were sat enjoying the weather. It’s such a sight to see and can not recommend it enough, definitely take time and make a visit whilst there. I was totally impressed by the cafes that line the King’s Garden and we took time to sit down and appreciate the view.
7. Södermalm
An island in the municipality of Stockholm which is linked to the centre by bridges. It is also known as Söder which roughly translates as south in Swedish. Though I can not recall the bus number we took from Skansen to Söder , I know we walked to Slussen to get a bird’s eye view of Stockholm city.
8. Stockholm Palace
Official residence of the Swedish Monarch and used for many official Royal functions. It is such a beautiful palace and lovely that you can walk outside it fairly easily. It’s very relaxing building but architecturally beautiful too.
9. Royal Swedish Opera
Whilst I didn’t get to enter the opera house there was enough architectural sighting of this building to keep me entertained. I have never been inside an opera house but I would have loved to enter the Royal Swedish Opera, even just once.
