Visiting Copenhagen was always a dream come true. When I was young I used to imagine what it would be like to visit this glorious city. To walk on the cobble stones in the old town, visit the famous Nyhavn harbour with it’s famous coloured buildings.
I had mentioned my intentions of visiting Copenhagen to a friend of mine and he decided he wanted to come with. Though I love solo traveling, sometimes it is nice to have some familiar company. I always love and enjoy meeting new people, exchanging contact details and hopefully meeting again in the future.
I booked my ticket for my Copenhagen weekend getaway three days before I was due to leave. I know I said I had been thinking about it for a while now but I was hoping the flights would be cheaper but apparently summer time does work that way. I ended up paying almost £300 for a less than 2 hours flight, talk about expensive flight.
Upon my arrival in Copenhagen, I took the M2 Train to Forum station (35 Danish Krones). Forum station is 15 minutes walk to the hostel ‘Sleep in Heaven (SiH). Because my friend had reserved the room and was paying, they kindly let me check-in temporary. I had had such a love long, left my home Thursday night and took a 5-hour bus to Manchester Airport. Slept at the airport for another 4 hours before my flight to Copenhagen.
Copenhagen Weekend Getaway
I rested for a good 30 – 45 minutes before I decided to go for a wonder around Copenhagen before my friend arrived. As a solo traveler I take pleasure in getting lost exploring every city I visit. Copenhagen is so easy to navigate, it is truly hard to get lost. I took a walk across the bridge then headed for the Botanical Gardens but I was in fact heading for the Rosenbord Castle which I couldn’t locate.
I managed to walk around a bit more in town before I decided to stop for lunch and enjoy some fresh fish Danish Delicacies. I do not always choose local delicacies on the first night in a new city, I often go for something familiar. This time I was feeling the urge to try something new and I did. As they say, you travel and experience new things everyday so don’t limit yourself.
Discovering New Places
After a long, long walk in Copenhagen (2+hrs worth in fact) I decided to head back to the hostel. The beauty about wandering around in a new city is you end up discovering new places. I managed to stumble upon a lovely shop selling African crafts from kitchen bowls to drawings and knitting. It was such a lovely shop, it brought back so many memories of things we used to make as kids. The store seemed to be particularly interested in South Africa and Zimbabwe, from the quick read that I did they are supporting women. Many women have got great skills that this company is utilising and selling their products in Denmark then sending the profits to them.
After a lovely straw around the city. I decided to visit the Botanical gardens one more time before I headed off back to the hostel. I had such a lovely time exploring parts of the city myself. I decided to wait until the following morning where I would join the Free walking tour.
Have you ever been to Copenhagen or visited any parts of Denmark? What was your initial thought?
