12 Cruise Ship Jobs to Apply For

When you think of jobs that allow you to travel the world, your first thoughts maybe becoming an air hostess. While this is a viable career choice, you shouldn’t ignore every other opportunity, such as working for a cruise line. If you’re a lover of ships, the sea and entertaining, then this is a better choice than being an air hostess.

There is more choice when it comes to working on a cruise line thank working on an aeroplane. Things like entertainment, medical, childcare, and even sailing and navigation are just a few examples. If you are, wondering what job to set sail for, here are 12 cruise ship jobs that may spark your interest.

Sailing and Navigation

This role is for those who enjoy responsibility, however, you will need to train for this role. Even though the captain gets all the credit, the captain often has a trusted team of individuals. In this role, you will need to work yourself through the chain of command. While training may be expensive, there are many personal loans that offer a no credit check that may help with financing your training.

Entertainment

If you’re an entertainer, then you can sing, dance, or even perform comedy on the stage of a cruise. Entertainers are in high demand so that that on-board are kept entertained post-dinner. If you are not an entertainer but are interested in the entertainment sector, there are many options available.

You could apply to become a cruise director (someone to plan and host the events), design the costumes, or even be a set director. What’s more, if you are a dance instructor or photographer, this is also a well-sought after job. Plus, if there is a casino on the cruise, then they will need casino staff who are trained in this area. All you have to do is find a cruise line that is needing the skills you are offering.

Hospitality

With many functions aboard a ship, every cruise line needs servers, waiters, hosts, cooks, and receptionists. If you have hotel experience or experience in food, then there are plenty of jobs available to you.

Medical

You need to ensure your passengers are safe and are well looked after. Doctors and nurses are a must so that both passengers and crew can be treated for any illness or ailments.

Childcare

If you enjoy looking after children, then take your childcare duties to the high seas.  Enjoy yourself while doing something you love; the parents will thank you for it. There are many families on-board, with parents who are desperate for a break from their kids. This is where you can step in. However, there is more to childcare than being a babysitter. For instance, you can help plan activities for children, as well as decide on food and the shows they can enjoy. You can also become a youth counselor.

Health and Wellness

Many people go on a cruise so that they can relax and feel replenished. This is why cruise ships hire massage therapists, spa professionals who specialize in Botox, acupuncture, medispa and other services. Yoga instructors and personal trainers are most sought after to help keep the passengers fighting fit.

Cosmetology

You may not think there’s room for hairstylists and makeup artists on a cruise ship, however, you couldn’t be more wrong. With many cruise ships offering a spa, passengers can have their hair trimmed, permed and colored. They can also treat themselves to a makeover before dinner.

Maintenance

The ship needs to be looked after, meaning people who are great at fixing things, be it the ship themselves or painting or re-carpeting, can find a job. A cruise ship will need an engineering crew so that the ship can remain intact and in good working order. From driving a forklift below deck to decks needing to be washed and painted to air-con needing maintenance and engines kept operating, those who are trained in such areas will fit perfectly in this career field.

Caring For the Crew

The crew cares for the passengers, but who cares for the crew? There is, in fact, a special group of cruise members whose job it is to cater to the crew, ensuring they are fed, watered and looked after. They plan social events for the crew so that they can relax and unwind, tidy up, and look after the crew’s uniforms. If you’re a tailor, some ships also have one on-board so that any ripped uniform can be fixed.

Recreation Management

Perhaps you haven’t given much thought to the person who is facilitating the fun. However, that person has a huge job of ensuring people are having a good time while also being safe. By overseeing the waterslide, zip line, and swimming pool, you can, yourself, have fun while making sure everyone else is too. What’s more, if you are a dive instructor, then there could also be a role for you on the ship.

Administration

The cruise line needs to run smoothly, plus the passengers and crew members on-board have to be looked after and organized from setting them up into certain rooms and having them shuttled from the airport to the ship and vice versa. Passengers need to be checked in, looked after, and although you may be sat behind a desk, this is a job that cannot be taken lightly. You are an important cog in the inner workings of a cruise ship.

Interior Design

The way the inside of a cruise looks is important for creating a certain vibe and experience. Cruises are expected to look luxurious, with the aesthetics needing to take the breath away from the passengers. If you have interior design experience and have a sharp eye for detail and design, then this may be the job for you.

I was always going to be a hairdresser on a cruise ship when I was younger, it never happened because I started a family instead. I would love to set sail and work my way around the world. This is a great post.
