Solo traveler consider airport transfer is my best ever advice. When I first went to Ljubljana in Slovenia I made a decision before I even left the UK to ensure I either booked airport transfer or consider private taxi hire. There is nothing worse that going to a foreign land and having no clue how to move about and even then when you land you find everything is written in local vernacular and hardly anyone speaks English (very common in some Eastern European countries).


As a solo traveler the first thing that comes to mind when I am booking my mini holidays or long haul holidays is my safety. Obviously nothing is 100% guaranteed but I always think it is important to make plans and prepare where possible. My first ever solo trip was to Zambia to see my family and friends, I was obviously more excited but I was still thinking of my safety. This was my first travel without my parents or MOH, I was looking forward to exploring my old towns, seeing my friends but with all these things going on in my mind the foremost was my safety. I went through all the basics my mummy ever taught me and my common sense. My second solo trip was visiting my friend in Seoul, South Korea. Again my safety not only when I arrived but before then at the airports. These two solo trips were the easiest and hardest I had ever done, easiest in terms of safety and hardest because it was me coming out of my comfort zone without a parachute.

Fast forward to my first solo weekend getaway to Brussels, I took Eurostar to Brussels, Belgium and when I arrived I had no clue where to go so I started looking for taxis to take me to my hotel. I paid more in taxis fare than a local because the taxis driver picked up on my nervousness (I asked the hotel guy how much it’s costs from that particular station to hotel and it seems I paid double that). I have learnt that this is a common occurrence in most countries so to combat that I have resorted to only ever using airport transfers because I know the price before hand, I already made arrangements as to when to be picked up and where to be dropped off and my return journey is sorted.

 

In Ljubljana, Slovenia I used a car service called Go Opti which offers airport transfer in a lot of cities. It was recommended by a fellow blogger so I was happy to use the service and glad I did. I was picked up from airport with 3 other people (I chose a shared device), first couple got dropped off first then 2 minutes later I got dropped off and confirmed with the driver the pickup for the next day back to the airport (I told you it was spontaneous).

In Praha (Prague), Czech Republic I booked airport transfer with Prague transfers. Like with Ljubljana I was picked up at airport terminal and though my flight was delayed the driver waited for us, this is the beauty about booking airport transfer but also a pitfall always check their conditions on delayed flights and contact numbers of they are 24 hours or not. We arrived 2 hours late, at 2am and Prague airport transfer driver waited, drove us to the hotel, ensured we had entered and checked in before he left. Pick up was incredible too, he arrived an hour early in case we changed our mind or transfer suddenly became a problem which thankfully was not the case. For Brno, Czech Republic I used Suntransfers a private tax service and they offer impeccable service, flight was slightly delayed and they waited.

I am not against using public transport, when I went back for round 2 to Seoul last year I took public transport from airport to my friend’s place as she was working. I did this because I knew where I was going, I was familiar with their transport system and speak enough to get shown the way. But for anyway new places I visit I feel for solo travelers it’s always important to think of your safety first and adventure second. I am not saying don’t take risks just be smart about them.

    I have travelled alone (with a baby) and always planned really well in advance. When I was living in New Zealand and came to the uk for a holiday (before returning here) I booked us into a airport pod to sleep and organised everything and it was the best thing I did. Made the trip so much easier.

    I’ve never not booked airport transport as the thought of just winging it to my destination totally freaks me out! I’m a bit of a control freak and get everything booked months beforehand. Having said that, I’ve never been abroad on my own either.

    totally agree with you on this one, it’s never worth risking your safety when travelling alone. You’re so vulnerable in so many ways and with a little careful planning like you can enjoy your break properly

    We usually have airport transfers included in the deal when we rent a car but we have never done it as you have. It sounds like an excellent idea and I will mention it to my hubby for our next holiday.xx

    I think traveling alone is a great adventure as I never prefer that. But it sounds like you had so much fun & had a great time out there. Might be helpful when I travel alone.

    I have travelled alone many times but without the comfort of these safe transfers. Which always made me feel I was in a crazy adventure. Now I will be able to have more peace of mind with your recommendation!

    I get anxious in airports and I’ll be traveling alone for the first time this year a few times so I’m really nervous! Love this post, it really isn’t as scary as I make it out to be, I’m just a drama queen haha!

    I have massive envy right now…I was always a free spirit, done anything and everything alone but now have 4 kids in tow….and it’s just not as easy nowadays. I would personally not book anything when I am flying solo, but that hasn’t done me great in the past as I’ve put myself in some dodgy situations….I would definitely book in advance 🙂

    I traveled alone once, to Switzerland and used taxis and there public transportation. However most people did speak english, so I wasn’t too worried. If I traveled to a country that didn’t speak english, I would definitely consider airport transfer.

      I think that’s the most important part for me, if English is not the common language or public transport is written in vernacular then airport transfer is it

    I rarely travel and when I do, it’s never alone. This is some great advice, and I’m sure it will be super helpful. I know if I ever have to travel alone I will be completely lost.

    I have only traveled a couple of times by myself but in my own country. If I traveled outside my country by myself I would not use the public transportation, The fear of both getting ripped off and the dangers would not be worth it to me. Thanks for sharing your experiences and I love the photos. The photos are indeed beautiful.

    The first time I ever flew alone was to meet my now-husband (who at that point I had never met) in his native Denmark. I had to fly to Amsterdam and then Denmark – it was the most nerve-wracking day of my life! But it was worth it! He picked me up from the airport but if I ever traveled alone again I would definitely prebook

    I’m so envious of all your amazing travels! Planning ahead is great not just for solo travelers…when we go away, it’s always smoother to have things like this secured, especially with little kids!

    I’ve never used airport transfer before but it occurs to me now that we did on holidays when I was a child – in places like New York City. I’ve always planned/read up on where I am going so I’ve known exactly what/where I’ve been going. But this sounds like a much safer option.

      I think with New York I just took public transport because well I can read and speak English but with other countries I don’t chance it

    Safety is so important for a solo traveller, especially a woman. I had a few tricks I used to use. I would wear a false wedding ring as in some countries married women are more respected. I also had two wallets. My real one which was kept in my inside pocket and a dummy wallet which only contained a couple of notes and nothing else. When I was mugged in New York, I handed over the dummy wallet. He got a bit of cash but no cards or personal effects.

    Honestly, the thought of travelling alone scares the crap out of me and excites me all at once. By nature I am a very chatty person so I can make friends everywhere I go but I would be quite concerned with my safety especially if I was anywhere at night. But then I am like that here! I have gone out of town by my own but never out of the country! Looks like you had a lot of fun though 🙂

      It used to scare me to death too but honestly after doing it a couple times I am better than before. I am a chatty person too but can become quite reserved sometimes

    Airport transfer sounds like a convenience one would certainly wish, especially when travelling alone. Ah, I wish I had travelled more alone. Before getting married, I would always do it with a friend. Your photos now make me yearn to do it too 🙂 x

    I’ve only ever travelled on my own once, to Poland, but the taxi ride to where I was staying was a little nerve wracking! I wish I’d planned ahead and gone with a pre-booked transfer. I nearly always arrange transfers when booking travel for my family, so I don’t know why I didn’t for just me!

    I am so jealous seeing some of the places you have been too! I have never ever been on a plane alone although I am generally the booker / organiser when we go any where so I think I would be ok lol. I ALWAYS make sure we have transfers before we fly, I am a little anxious so my worst nightmare would be arriving in a foreign land with no idea how to get where I am going xxxx
