During our recent Adventures Exploring North Wales, Canolfan Y-Fron Bunk House was our base for the weekend. Canolfan Y-Fron Bunk House is housed in the former village school which dates from 1844. It is lottery funded, community run centre and owned which welcomes visitors of Snowdonia throughout the year.
The brand new Bunk House is an 18 bed Llety (deluxe accommodation) with four rooms. Each room is named off an area in North Wales, Room 1 – Moel Tryfan, Room 2 – Mynydd Cilgwyn and Room 3 – Moel Smytho. The fourth room, Mynydd Mawr is where we slept during the week and sleeps 6 people. The accommodations is suitable for individuals, couples, families and groups up-to 18 people.
Our stay at Canolfan Y-Fron Bunk House was complimentary, as first guests before it officially opens. We were allocated to room 4 – Mynydd Mawr, the room sleeps 6 and like other rooms has an ensuite wet room.
Canolfan Y-Fron Bunk House
Canolfan Y-Fron Bunk House is a brand new accommodation located in the village of Fron. Fron is situated 6 miles away from the Royal town of Caernarfon at the bottom of the elephant mountains. The bunk house is idea for adventurous individuals or families who enjoy the great outdoors.
Canolfan Y Fron is not only a bunk house but a Café and community shop, the perfect pit stop for the hikers. The cafe serves breakfast, cakes, teas and coffees including evenings meals which should be pre-arranged. Whilst the community shop stocks basic essentials including soft drinks, takeaway meals and local specialty items.
ACCOMMODATION OPTIONS
The Canolfan Y-Fron Bunk House sleeps 18 people across four ensuite rooms in deluxe bunk pods. Of the four rooms, room 4 – Mynydd Mawr is the largest and sleeps 6 people. Room 3 – Moel Smytho is the second largest, sleeps 5 and has Disabled Access. Room 2 – Mynydd Cilgwyn sleeps 3 in a deluxe double bed and a single bunk pod.
The final room is room 1 – Moel Tryfan and sleeps up to 4 people, a perfect room for a small family. Should you wish to book the entire Bunk House, that is possible, all the rooms have;
- Each pod has an extra-long, extra wide and extra-deep mattress
- Duvet, sheets and pillow are also provided
- Each pod has a curtain for ensure privacy and a reading light.
- All rooms are ensuite is a wet room, monsoon shower, sink and toilet.
- Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the building
- USB charging points are available besides the bunk beds
The new Bunk House is located on the SnowdoniaSlate Trail making it the perfect place to stay for the night. Guests can make use of the self-catering kitchen which has sofas, tables and chairs and FreeSat TV. For those traveling by care, there are four electric vehicle charging points on site.
Our Thoughts on Canolfan Y-Fron Bunk House
We arrived at the Canolfan Y Fron Bunk House late at night and did not get to appreciate the view. Our check in was pretty swift, we had to complete health and Safety forms. We met other guests who were sat in the common room before being shown to our room.
With 6 deluxe bunk pods to choose from, we were spoilt for choice but chose the pods away from the door. What we loved was each pod had a privacy curtain and USB charging ports next to the bed. Though those on top bunk bed would find it troublesome due to the location of the charing ports.
We found the mattresses to be super comfortable and the bedding very soft and warm. Autumn and Winter in the UK can be quite brutal so its good to have such warm bedding. Plus the floors are heated which is just perfect for those of us who love walking barefoot.
The community shop opens around 11am during the weekend and 8am during the week. However, if you prefer local supermarkets, Caernarfon is only six miles away from the Bunk House. But for basic essentials the community shop is very convenient located.
We had such a lovely time during our stay in Canolfan Y-Fron Bunk House and impressed with the deluxe pods. The wet is fitted with monsoon shower heads making for a relaxation shower after a long day of hiking. We honestly can not fault this new bunk house, whilst it had its teething issues, it is still very functional.
