Slovenia is known as the green country of Europe and it’s not hard to see why. I have been twice and each time I have been totally blown away by its beauty and I crave to go back every time I return home. I am reliving my experiences by looking at my recent pictures from Glamping with Big Berry and I thought why not share with you 5 epic reasons why you should visit and explore Slovenia.
There are so many places to see and explore in Slovenia, the common places include Ljubljana City and Castle, Bled Lake and Castle and maybe not so common Vintgar Gorge. I wanted to add my own experience of these places and include two more options; Big Berry Camp in Primostek and the Kolpa River which separates Slovenia and Croatia.
Ljubljana
The capital and the largest city in Slovenia and possibly your easiest starting point on your journey to explore Slovenia. Legend has it that Ljubljana was founded by the Greek mythological hero Jason and his companions, the Argonauts, who had stolen the golden fleece from King Aetes and fled from him across the Black Sea and up the Danube, Sava and Ljubljanica rivers. Ljubljana is a quite and yet lively city with so much to offer, every week in the city centre you get experience the market which has varieties of foods from all over Slovenia. Visiting the castle gives you the magnificent view of the entirety of Ljubljana. The city is easy to navigate by public transport or private hire, the city is filled with so many little cafes and boutiques.
They stopped at a large lake in the marsh near the source of the Ljubljanica, where they disassembled their ship to be able to carry it to the Adriatic Sea, put it together again, and return to Greece. The lake where they made a stop was the dwelling place of a monster. Jason fought the monster, defeated it and killed it. The monster, now referred to as the Ljubljana Dragon, found its place atop the castle tower on the Ljubljana coat of arms. {Source}
Lake Bled and Bled Castle
Bled Castle is one of the oldest medieval castles in Slovenia, it is perched atop a steep cliff above the glacial Lake Bled. It did take me a minute to walk up the Castle and get one of the best views from the castle facing Lake Bled, even after you’ve complained about the steep climb I can assure you that the views will take all of that away and you will be left with only joy for climbing atop this castle.

Castle terraces offer spectacular views of the lake and the island, down the Dežela area with Lesce and Radovljica and over to the mountain ranges of the Karavanke and the Julian Alps. {Source}
Vintgar Gorge
I recently had the pleasure of walking the 1.6 km long Vintgar gorge which carves its way through the vertical rocks of the Hom and Bort hills and is graced by the Radovna with its waterfalls, pools and rapids. The trail is easy to walk, refreshing for the soul and mind and leads you over wooden bridges, Žumr’s galleries, and ends with a bridge overlooking the mighty 13 m high Šum waterfall (bottom left picture below).
The Vintgar gorge also includes two man-made sights. The single-arch stone bridge of the Bohinj railway, constructed in 1906, which crosses the gorge 33.5 m above the trail, and the dam from which the water is routed to the small Vintgar hydroelectric power plant under the Šum waterfall.{Source}
Big Berry Camp
Big Berry camp is a lifestyle resort located in Bela Krajina region replacing the old Primostek camp, the first of its kind in Slovenia. I had the pleasure of being a guest of Big Berry for four days and I can honestly say they were the best four days of 2016 so far. Big Berry camp offers a different way of camping, those who know me know I am not the camping type but add some glamour to it and you’ve got yourself some glamorous camping and I am all over it.
Big Berry cabins are equipped with everything you need in a cabin; a modern kitchen, two bedrooms – one housing two bunk beds to sleep 4 and one housing a double bed to sleep two. There is on offer another cabin for a single person or a couple with a double bed and modern kitchen. All cabins are equipped with indoor bathroom/toilet and outside each has a jacuzzi for those relaxing evenings. The best part about staying with Big Berry aside from the wonderful atmosphere is the free breakfast providing with items from over 20 locally sourced products.
Kolpa River
River Kupa or Kolpa river allows one to experience two countries in one as this river separates and acts as a border between Slovenia and Croatia. It is estimated to be 297 kilometers long with relatively clean water and thought to be picturesque. Whilst staying with Big Berry we have the pleasure of canoeing across this river and it was just amazing and peaceful. I hardly ever canoe but I thought I could do it forever just to experience the calmness and beauty of this river.
There is so much more to Slovenia than the aforementioned places and I hope to explore Slovenia more in the future. Though my stay with Big Berry was complimentary, I highly recommend it for those looking for a relaxing environment but still filled with adventure and intrigue. Big Berry often has many activities to cater for all, from solo & couple travelers to family travelers.
Disclosure: Thank you Big Berry for hosting my stay in Slovenia.
