How Much Should I Charge for Sponsored Posts?

Sponsored posts are one of the many ways that bloggers make money from blogging. Often, bloggers struggle with how much one should charge for a sponsored post. No one likes to talk about money more so in blogging, often people keep this hush! hush.

Back when I started making money from the blogging, I had no clue about how much I should be charging for posts. It is not something widely talked about in the blogging community. No one wants to share in case PR companies see that and don’t pay you the full budget. It is understandable and quite rightly so, but we still need to discuss it.

Sponsored posts are one of the many ways that bloggers make money from blogging. Often, bloggers struggle with how much one should charge for a sponsored post.

Things to consider

Every blogger knows how much work goes into running a blog; researching, writing, promoting content and graphics. So when it comes to charging for sponsored posts, we want to ensure all the hard work is paid. Every sponsored post is different, some require more work than others, so how do you differentiate?

This can be quite a tough one but I think it boils down to how much work goes into producing the content. Remember some campaigns might even require making a video so take that into consideration. Here are some things to consider when working out your fees

Sponsored posts are one of the many ways that bloggers make money from blogging. Often, bloggers struggle with how much one should charge for a sponsored post.

Niche and Audience

As a lifestyle blogger, I do not have a specific niche, I blog about pretty much everything. When it comes to accepting sponsored posts, I still look at what I blog about. For example, I don’t talk about pets on here so I wouldn’t accept a sponsored post around that topic.

Another thing to consider is how engaged is your audience to blog. You’re looking to charge someone to appear on your blog, make sure your audience is reflective. Does your audience interact with you in your comments, are they engaged?

Domain Authority

Most brands these days are looking for blogs with domain above 25 (not all of them). Domain authority is measured based on three criteria; age, popularity and size measuring the power of your domain. A July dreamer (ajulydreamer.com) domain authority is 45, which is a pretty high domain. I use this to come up with a fee for every sponsored post.

How big is your social reach

People will often say its not about the numbers but to be honest, with most companies it is. If you have a large and very engaged community then trust that companies will want to work with you. They can see the value in working with you and possible returns to them overall.

Know your worth

When you’re starting out you feel £20 is amazing money and you go over and beyond. But if you put it into another context, the brand will get exposure for as long as your blog is live. Think it about much work you have to put into the post and anything extra that’s required.

How Much Should I Charge for Sponsored Posts?

For the first two years of my blog, I pretty much accepted whatever the brand offered. I did not negotiate because I felt lucky to have made some money from this blog. To be frank, I was not confident in my skills nor did I value my work as a blogger.

Fast forward today and I have found two formulas that I absolutely love and often use. The first is your domain times 4.5, so basically 45×4.5 = £202.50 this looks about right. Then the second formula is daily views divide by 10, e.g. 500/10 = £50, you know which I prefer.

Have a read through my work with me page, I created a table of all my fees and categories. Whilst I don’t often accept anything less than £50, there have been times that I have had for personal reasons.

One thing I should mention is whilst traffic is important, it is not everything. Remember, brands will get exposure from the day the article is live and most probably forever. You decide what you think you’re worth and what you can give the brand. After all, this is a give and take type of relationship.

What other bloggers charge

As always, I reached out to my fellow bloggers to find out how much they charge for sponsored posts. We are all different but we all understand the importance of self-evaluation.

Emma of www.emmaand3.com says It varies so much depending on whether it’s an seo job or a pr campaign. It also depends on how many deliverables. This month I’ve had everything between £200 to £950.

Jen of www.justaveragejen.com says It depends how long the work required takes. I guess I probably charge the equivalent of around £100 an hour. Though obviously spend hours on blog work that isn’t paid too.

And finally, Vicky of www.misstillyandme.co.uk says I have a DA of 20 on my new blog. Do I usually charge between £50 and £100, but I have also taken £25 or £30 for a blog post before when I have needed the money. If it involves a bit of social media too I can get £200.

As you can see, we all charge different amounts even in similar niches. It all boggles down to what I have already mentioned above plus confidence in your work.

That’s something that bloggers often disagree on. Because there are bloggers who are okay with charging low rates to brands and then there are those who think about all the work that’s going to be done. I hope more people read this post. It’s important to know your value.

Oh I know, for most it’s a difference between putting food on and table and starving. If I was in that situation, I would definitely take the low rate but I also want PRs and brands to realise nothing is free and it takes money to run a website.
