Why I don’t DIY I hear you ask? Well it’s simple, I am a walking hazard on my own. I seem to have the gift of two left hands and can’t seem to DIY to save my life. Don’t get me wrong, I would love to do a little DIY to feel that accomplishment of doing it yourself.
The biggest and smallest DIY I have ever attempted is building the furniture in my apartment. The biggest danger I have ever posed on myself was bringing a hammer down too quickly on my pinky. Yes ouch! it hurt like a mother load of something else that’s why I don’t DIY.
For those who love to DIY, I thought I share some of the dangers of DIY. Granted there is no comparable feeling to building something yourself as opposed to having someone do it for you. But it is also equally important to remember that dangers exist and have precautions in place to avoid them.
Why I don’t DIY ~ DIY Dangers
Back in the day, many homes were built and filled with asbestos roofing and lead containing paints. Though banned, there are older homes that still contain these dangerous chemicals. DIY’ing your home is such an exciting project, if your home contains these dangerous chemicals, precaution is required.
These chemicals are airborne toxins that can enter your lungs without proper protection and cause respiratory issues. Lead paints and asbestos are linked to many cancers which many people are still seeking compensation for.

Volatile organic compounds in paints, adhesives and cleaning products can cause cardiovascular problems like arrhythmias. Certain solvents in paints and oils can also cause skin irritation. The dangers of DIY’ing are many but it does not mean they can not be prevented.
Roofing even with the right products (asbestos free products) can cause a danger to you. Whilst on the roof, you could misstep and that could lead you to fall. Precaution should always be taken to ensure your safety.
Electrical wiring is another danger, unless you’re a qualified person to handle electrical wiring in your home I would leave it to the professionals. It’s better to be safe than sorry, you want to actually live in your DIY’d home not die before it’s finished.
There are many reasons why I don’t DIY but the above are just some of the few reasons. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying do not DIY some home improvements but be careful or call in the professionals.

I love a bit of DIY but I agree it’s sensible to know your limits. I always google everything first, and watch some YouTube vids. If it looks like it should be done by an expert, I let an expert do it!

I think that’s the best way forward, there are many DIY’s we can do ourselves but since I am a clats I stay clear of any DIY lol

I really admire those that DIY as it is an impressive and, as you note, a dangerous job! I am neither skilled enough nor brave enough. These are some important points to consider for sure.

I work in a DIY store and I often come across people who think they know how to do the job but don’t. These sorts of people are dangerous and shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near it. I once sold drywall screws to this guy who wanted screws for plasterboard. When he got the box he said to me where on the box does it say its for plasterboard. He clearly had no idea what drywall/plasterboard meant. The customer behind him couldn’t believe how stupid he was. These sorts of people think they know how to do the job but end up messing it up. Don’t even get me started on power tools or DIYers trying to do plumbing or electrics. It’s because of people like them tradesmen get lots of work x

I never even thought of these dangers of DIY and I’m so glad you brought them to my attention. My sister is in the midst of rehabbing a very old home. Mesothelioma is scary. I used to work in the cancer center at the Cleveland Clinic and it can happen to anyone. It’s not something that occurs through unhealthy life choices – like smoking.

Totally agree. When it comes to the big construction, demolish, paint and rebuild I like to leave it up to the experts. I’ll stick to decorating after they are done.

You’re so right that these dangers exist! When my husband and I work on our wood furniture pieces for customers, we wear face masks. It seems like overkill but some of the things we have to use such as lacquer, has a very strong odor.

I really like doing little DIY’s liking painting mason jars and stuff like that but I would never try to do a home renovation DIY. I know me and I’m not a craftsmen in the slightest (I’m also super clumsy!).
