Lucerne Switzerland, a small compact city in centrally located known for its medieval architecture and beautiful mountains. A suburb of Zürich with great food and impressive views leaving you with a lasting impression. In Lucerne the most language spoken is {Swiss} German with a population of over 82,000 and has 17 municipalities.
I had the pleasure of visiting Lucerne in June of this year in an effort to complete my 30 countries before 30. Prior to visiting Lucerne, I had never heard of it but familiar with Basel, Geneva and Zürich. It was during my research for my trip to Basel when I stumbled upon this lovely and magnificent city.
5 Things to do in Lucerne Switzerland
As with most places I travel to, I make my mission to visit different places and try new things. Lucerne, no exception and thought I didn’t get to explore much, here is what I managed to see. If you ever get a chance to visit, here are the 5 things I recommend to see or do in Lucerne Switzerland.
Chapel Bridge {Kapellbrücke}
The Chapel Bridge is the oldest wooden bridges in Europe and is a centre piece of the old town in Lucerne. Built in the 14th century since been rebuilt after the disastrous fire of 1993. The bridge is named after St. Paul’s chapel and spans diagonally across the Reuss River.
Water Tower {Wasserturm}
Wasserturm means Water Tower though this is not a water tower in the usual sense. It is a tower ‘standing’ in water and previously used as a prison and torture chamber.

Lake Lucerne
The fourth largest lake in Switzerland with a complicated shape giving to multiple bends and four arms. I have the great pleasure of taking a ferry on Lake Lucerne on our way to Mount Pilatus. The lake is surrounded by magnificent views and whilst its shore lines are covered with stony mountains.
Jesuit Church
The first large sacral Baroque church in the North of the Alps, a catholic church built in the 17th century. Seeing the church for the first time had me too mesmerized to think of anything else. It is such a beautiful church unlike anything I have ever seen.

Mount Pilatus
I will start with a confession, I have never climbed a mountain before later on reached the peak. Visiting Mount Pilatus was the first {reaching the peak not climbing it} and it was the best thing ever. To get to Mount Pilatus you hop on a ferry to Alpnachstad where you can catch a gondola and aerial cable car. It was such an incredible experience riding all the way to the top with such incredible views.
Lucerne is one compact city that I highly recommend and want to visit again.

Lucerne looks such a beautiful place, I love the water tower and the view from Mount Pilatus. Switzerland isn’t a country I know very much about so I’d love to learn more about it and hopefully visit one day.

I have never heard of Lucerne, and quite honestly have never really placed Switzerland in my top ten of places to go, but I will definitely do that now!! It looks gorgeous and I love the history!

Love this place. I haven’t been but my Mm dad went there last year and covered all of these 5 places you’ve mentioned. They loved Lake Lucerne and Mount Pilatus the most.
