Looking back at each decade, I feel both ‘older’ and ‘younger’, I see the change in my features, the change in my way of life, the change in my personality and the experience itched on my face. I am grateful for the life I have lived thus far and excited for the life I am yet to live.

2026 - 39, (Home, England), I am ready for this final year before my 40s but also ready for this next decade.
2016 - 29, (Oslo, Norway), this decade was about self discovery and building the life I dreamt about. The life that I am super proud of and truly grateful to be living. This decade, I built my financial life and in later years choose to heal from the trauma gained in the last decade and now I feel well equipped for the future.
2006 - 19, (Glasgow, Scotland), I thought I was grown (look at the cheekbones 🤣🤣) and ready for the world, chiiiild was I wrong, let’s just say, I am still resolving the trauma the decade brought me but I am grateful because I met my best friends and made decisions for the future I wanted to have. (Spoiler alert - I did better than I dreamed).
1996 - 9, (Home, Zambia) this was my birthday but my little sister insisted she had to be the one in the middle. The only way we knew whose birthday it was, was by standing in the middle but this year I remember baby sister crying her eyes out and refusing 🤨
1988 - 9 months, (Chililabombwe, Zambia) although my mother looks tired and traumatised😟, I know I was loved and happy.

Moving For the First Time? 6 Tips to Make the Transition Easy

Ah, the joy of moving into a new place! While it's a time filled with excitement and new beginnings, it can also bring about a mix of emotions, especially if it's your first time. Some might feel anxious, some might feel overwhelmed, and some might regret bidding farewell to the big city life.

Ah, the joy of moving into a new place! While it’s a time filled with excitement and new beginnings, it can also bring about a mix of emotions, especially if it’s your first time. Some might feel anxious, some might feel overwhelmed, and some might regret bidding farewell to the big city life. For instance, statistics from the US census show that 79,535 residents moved out of Miami to other cities in Florida or other states, which isn’t an easy transition.

But fear not! Like any big task, a systematic approach can turn this gigantic mountain into a molehill.

Every great plan starts with understanding what's ahead. Think of moving like planning a vacation. Sure, spontaneous trips can be fun, but knowing where you're going, what to expect, and having a checklist can make the journey so much better. Moving is a mix of logistics - boxing items, lifting, and transporting - and emotions. Leaving behind a familiar place is a big step, but it also means stepping into new opportunities and adventures.

Understanding the Basics of Moving

Every great plan starts with understanding what’s ahead. Think of moving like planning a vacation. Sure, spontaneous trips can be fun, but knowing where you’re going, what to expect, and having a checklist can make the journey so much better. Moving is a mix of logistics – boxing items, lifting, and transporting – and emotions. Leaving behind a familiar place is a big step, but it also means stepping into new opportunities and adventures.

Now, diving deep into the first three steps to make your move straightforward:

1.   Research and Hire Reliable Movers

The thought of moving, especially for the first time, might feel like trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle – without seeing the big picture. That’s where a moving company in Miami can be a game-changer. They are the professionals who’ve done this a thousand times. They know the nitty-gritty of packing, handling fragile items, and ensuring everything reaches your new place safe and sound.

Hiring moving experts will offer peace of mind since they’re experienced in moving houses and possess the essential equipment and supplies crucial for a smooth transition.

2.   Start Packing Early

Procrastination can be the enemy when it comes to moving. Last-minute scrambles can lead to things being left behind, broken items, or sheer panic. Starting on time is the key.

Begin with items you don’t use daily. Maybe those books you’ve read, the winter clothes if it’s summer or the fancy dinnerware that’s for special occasions. By packing these things first, you gradually reduce the workload as the moving day approaches without affecting your daily life.

Another pro tip: Labeling. It’s a simple act but can save you heaps of time and confusion later. Imagine opening ten boxes only to find your toothbrush or your favorite mug. By clearly marking each box, you’ll know where things are when you’re setting up your new place. It’s like giving your future self a little gift.

3.   Declutter and Donate

Less is more, especially when moving. Before you start packing, take a good look around. There will likely be items you haven’t used in ages – maybe clothes that don’t fit, outdated gadgets, or items that don’t ‘spark joy’ anymore.

Why move with these extra weights? Decluttering can be therapeutic. It’s like shedding old skin. Create three piles: Donate, Sell, and Recycle. Items in good condition but not useful for you anymore can be donated. There are always people who might find them valuable. By selling some items, you can even make a little extra cash to offset some moving costs. And for those things that are neither sellable nor donatable, recycling is the way to go.

4.   Keep a Moving Checklist

Lists can be lifesavers, especially when there’s so much to remember. Think of a moving checklist as your roadmap. Just like you wouldn’t embark on a road trip without a map (or at least GPS), you shouldn’t dive into moving without a clear guide.

Start by listing big tasks, like ‘pack the kitchen’ or ‘hire a moving company in Miami.’ Then, break these down into smaller tasks. Under ‘pack the kitchen,’ you might have ‘pack dishes,’ ‘wrap glassware,’ or ’empty the fridge.’ As you progress, ticking things off your list will give you a satisfying feeling of accomplishment. It’s like watching your to-dos shrink right before your eyes!

Beyond packing, don’t forget about other important tasks. Have you informed your bank about the move? Do utility companies know to switch services to your new place? A checklist ensures nothing slips through the cracks.

5.   Pack an Essentials Bag

Imagine, after a tiring day of moving, you’re at your new place, and all you want is a refreshing shower. But, oh no, where did you pack the toiletries? Well, to avoid situations like this, it’s a smart move to pack an essentials bag.

This bag should have everything you’ll need for the first day and night at your new home. Items might include toiletries, a change of clothes, chargers, important documents, some snacks, and maybe even a coffee maker if you can’t start your day without caffeine! Think of it as a mini vacation bag. This way, even if you don’t get to unpack everything immediately, you have your crucial items at arm’s length.

6.   Familiarize Yourself with Your New Area

A new place can feel unfamiliar, but it’s also full of new adventures waiting to be explored. Before you move or shortly after, spend some time getting to know your surroundings. Knowing where the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, or hospital is can be immensely helpful. Not only does it reduce the feeling of being a ‘stranger’ in a new place, but it also makes day-to-day tasks easier.

Engage with your neighbors or join local online groups. They can offer advice, recommend the best spots to eat, or help you feel more at home. It’s not just about the physical move; it’s also about embedding yourself in the community and feeling a part of it.

Conclusion

Moving, especially for the first time, can feel like a mammoth task. But, like any challenge, breaking it down into manageable steps makes it achievable. By planning, decluttering, getting help from pros like a moving company in Miami, and ensuring you’re set for the first day in your new place, the process becomes smoother. Remember, every ending is a new beginning. Embrace the adventure that awaits in your new home.
