Looking back at each decade, I feel both ‘older’ and ‘younger’, I see the change in my features, the change in my way of life, the change in my personality and the experience itched on my face. I am grateful for the life I have lived thus far and excited for the life I am yet to live.

2026 - 39, (Home, England), I am ready for this final year before my 40s but also ready for this next decade.
2016 - 29, (Oslo, Norway), this decade was about self discovery and building the life I dreamt about. The life that I am super proud of and truly grateful to be living. This decade, I built my financial life and in later years choose to heal from the trauma gained in the last decade and now I feel well equipped for the future.
2006 - 19, (Glasgow, Scotland), I thought I was grown (look at the cheekbones 🤣🤣) and ready for the world, chiiiild was I wrong, let’s just say, I am still resolving the trauma the decade brought me but I am grateful because I met my best friends and made decisions for the future I wanted to have. (Spoiler alert - I did better than I dreamed).
1996 - 9, (Home, Zambia) this was my birthday but my little sister insisted she had to be the one in the middle. The only way we knew whose birthday it was, was by standing in the middle but this year I remember baby sister crying her eyes out and refusing 🤨
1988 - 9 months, (Chililabombwe, Zambia) although my mother looks tired and traumatised😟, I know I was loved and happy.

How To Prepare Yourself For Getting Older

No one wants to grow old but sadly this is a part of everyone’s life. The good news is that there are plenty of ways that you can start preparing for your old age now to ensure that you are ready and can still live your life. Here, we are going to give you some ideas on how you can do this so keep reading if you’d like to find out more.

Get Rid Of Debt

When you are older, you are more likely to be out of work, so you won’t have the income that you once had. This is why you should start getting rid of your debt now to ensure that you are free in the future. This means that you will be able to spend your money on whatever you please and you won’t have that worry hanging over you. Think about paying off your mortgage and student loans to be debt free.

Adapt Your Home

Another great way to prepare yourself for getting older is to adapt your home. Although you might not be thinking about this now, you’ll find that by changing your bathroom to be suitable for someone who is older and less mobile, you can be ready for the future. You can find some useful suggestions in this list by Premier Care which includes options such as shower seats and wider doorways. This advice will help you to adapt your bathroom in a stylish way that will let you use it in the future – so make sure to make this change now.

Get Some Exercise

If you are someone who doesn’t exercise much, then now is the time to get started. You’ll find that if you start a new sport or begin walking more often, you’ll be able to do it more once you get older. Getting into the habit of exercising when you are young will get you in shape and make it less difficult when you are older. It is important that you are healthy when you are older so make sure to take this tip on board.

Plan Ahead

Although you might not want to think about your eventual death you should think about writing a will to ensure that everything you have is going to go where you want it. Writing a will is very important especially if you have kids so make sure to get in touch with a professional who can help you with this and you will feel a lot better about the future of your possessions.

Be Positive

You may not want to get old, but you should try to remain positive about it if you want to be ready. Think about how much more time you will have when you are older, how you can see more of your family and friends and start a new hobby. There are many benefits to being older so make sure to see the positive side and go into old age with grace.

Final Verdict

If you are thinking about your future, then you should make sure that you are prepared for when you get a little older. Think about adapting your home now to ensure that you can stay there for as long as possible and try to remain positive about the whole thing. You should also get a new hobby and try exercising a lot more to get yourself in shape for when you are older. Make sure to take on board all of the tips that we have given you in this article and you should be able to see getting old as a positive thing when you are prepared.
