The immune system is the most critical component of good health. Without the immune system, we would be vulnerable to attacks from pathogens. It protects us from cell changes and harmful substances.
The immune system protects the body by identifying and responding to antigens, protein-like substances on the surface of viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. White blood cells are the ‘security personnels’ of the immune system. They patrol the blood and tissues to identify and ‘arrest’ foreign invaders.
Coronavirus has made people more focused on their health this year, mainly because the virus can evade the body’s immune system. The virus disrupts and delays the intervention of the immune cells. However, strengthening the immune system reduces that possibility.
What is the Immune System?
The immune system is a nexus of cells, organs, and proteins that protect the body from infections. These include the white blood cells, antibodies, complement system, lymphatic system, spleen, bone marrow, and thymus.
There are two core parts of the immune system regarding its functionality to prevent diseases: the innate and adaptive immune systems. The innate immune system is the body’s first line of defense. It actively patrols the body. When an invader is recognized, the cells of this system (phagocytes) surround and kill the pathogen.
The adaptive immune system produces antibodies (B and T cells) from the lymphatic system. These cells are developed after the body is initially exposed to the pathogen. After the innate system kills the invader, an immunological memory of the invader is developed, enabling it to kill old enemies when they re-enter the body.
The adaptive system also fights new diseases, but it responds slowly compared to the innate immune system. It takes a couple of days for it to build immunity. It also changes over time through the course of an individual’s life.
How Does It Protect You?
The white blood cells have a short life span and are produced constantly in the bone marrow. After production, they are distributed and stored in the blood vessels, thyroid, lymph nodes, spleen, and other parts of the body. Once there is an invader in the body, the white blood cells are immediately transported to the point of contact through the lymphatic system.
On contact with the germs, your white blood cells absorb or destroy the germs. It does this by forming antibodies that latch onto the germs and eliminate them. Again, this shows how the innate and adaptive systems collaborate. Fighting a new pathogen usually takes longer. However, with a recurrence, the body remembers the pathogen and fights it faster.
How Do You Strengthen It?
The most guaranteed way to a healthy immune system is to eat a balanced diet consistently. Doing so means eating lots of fruits and vegetables. This way, the body gets the regular supply of vitamins and minerals it needs to fight off pathogens and invaders. These nutrients have specific roles they play in the body.
Vitamin A, C, D, and E have potent antioxidants that help fight infections. Folic acid, iron, selenium, and zinc are also essential nutrients that the immune system needs. It takes a lot of discipline and consistency to get all these from food. This situation is where supplements save the day.
Supplements help to complement nutrient deficiencies in meals. These supplements come in tablets, syrups, capsules, and powders. There are even gummies to support your immune system. This way, all nutrients are available to improve the immune system’s defenses.
How Does Exercise Help?
Exercise is another proven way to boost the immune system and fight off infections. Exercise reduces stress and inflammation, increases blood flow and strengthens antibodies. Frequent exercise improves the immune system’s response and trackers.
Exercises you can engage in for a full-body workout include burpees, yoga, isometric exercises, and abs building routine. Research also shows that exercise reduces the rate of respiratory tract infections. The intensity that comes with exercise improves blood flow. This added intensity improves the immune system.
Supplement Complements
Research shows we come in contact with about 60,000 germs daily. Of these germs, 1,200 have the potential to be dangerous to the human body. This and more is why the immune system has to be at its optimum best daily.
It isn’t easy to eat a balanced diet day in day out, coupled with the busy schedules of many. However, the correct dose of certain supplements will do the trick—gummies allow you to support your immune system while easily imbibing essential nutrients for overall body health.

This post is very timely. We should indeed strengthen our immune system to avoid infection. Healthy habits like getting enough rest and eating a balanced diet help. We should also aim for mental wellness as it affects the body, too.

I have long been a big supplements fan. I need to incorporate more exercise into my daily routine. I hope to do so in the upcoming week. I didn’t realize selenium was immune boosting and I think I may add more foods that contain that into my diet. Thank you for the info!
