With Valentines Day fast approaching lovers across the country are mauling over the perfect gift, I have been thinking about romantic weekend getaway spots in Britain. I am a romantic at heart and short of creating a romantic feel at home, I love traveling to romantic destinations. Those who know you will tell you, I am always chasing the next flight deals somewhere obscure and I love it. But when it comes to Valentines’ Day, there is nothing I love more than being home within the UK with a loved one.
In the UK, we are so fortunate to have so many getaway spots to choose from, I recently shared my favorite UK city breaks and though I still stand by them, for romantic weekend getaway spots, I was thinking places that left a lasting impression on me. I often travel abroad on weekend getaways and so many places have left various impressions on me but this year I want to travel more within the UK and revisit places that are either new to me or left a lifetime impression on me and would be ideal to share with a loved one.
Romantic Weekend Getaway Spots in Britain
In the UK, we have a notorious reputation for being way too expensive than most cities in Europe and this reputation is even worse during special holidays. It is always interesting for me to find cheaper deals to explore a foreign country than to take a trip within the UK to another city. During Valentines’ Day, it’s even more hard to find affordable places especially for those on a budget and what I always recommend is to make these trips a day trip than an overnight stay.
But for Valentines’ Day, you always wanted to spend some time away just the two of you especially for those with kids. In that instance, I have listed below the most romantic weekend getaway spots in Britain and all cost a pretty penny. But when booked in advance or booked hotels on the outskirts of the city, you will find some great deals. Within Great Britain, there are so many wonderful romantic destinations that couples can enjoy over the weekend.
The Cotswolds
The Cotswolds is one of the most popular areas in the country, located in the Southcentral and western region of England. It is an area popular with many movie directors and tourists alike and I would recommend Bourton on Water for a romantic destination for Valentines’ Day. You can explore many small towns in this region and make the most of your weekend getaway.
Edinburgh
The Scottish capital needs no introduction and it is one of the most romantic cities in Britain and welcomes every type of visitor. Having visited Edinburgh a few times in the last couple of years, I felt it is a city I could easily get lost in but still not managed to explore even half of it. If the Scottish capital is on your radar, I would recommend staying along the Royal Mile as it makes it easier to explore the city.
Portmeirion
Portmeirion is a brainchild of Sir Clough Williams-Ellis, an Italian inspired village nestled in the bosom of North Wales. Even though it took 50 years to create this color village its beauty is unfading. It’s a place I hope to take my parents to in the near future and hopefully my kids too. For couples, this is the perfect place to experience a bit of Italy without actually jetting off abroad.
Cornwall
Cornwall is situated in the southwestern tip of England, it is one of the most beautiful destinations in the country all year round. Having visited last summer, we are eager to explore again but also thought even with the cold month of February, it would still be romantic to explore this part of the country.
London
The English capital is one of the most visited cities in the UK, it has something for every visitor but it can be quite expensive too. Whenever I visit London it is often a day trip than an overnight stay, for lovers looking to spend a romantic weekend in London, I would visit outside special days like the weekend after Valentines’ Day.
The list of romantic weekend getaway spots in Britain that I have compiled is based on places I would love to explore one day soon. But I am sure you will agree with me when I say these are some of the best locations we have in the country.

I live in Edinburgh, but I’ve never thought of it as romantic, haha. I guess it’s different when it’s in front of you all the time. From your list, I would love to visit Cornwall.

Some great ideas here. I honestly fell in love with Edinburgh as soon as we went there a few years back. I also have great memories of going to Cornwall as a child and have always wanted to go back!

This is such a great list – I know all these places well and completely agree that they can be as magical and romantic places to visit as anywhere overseas. Cornwall especially is one of my favourite places in the UK. We visited there in the Autumn last year, and it was absolutely amazing – so much less crowded, and still so beautiful and fun to explore even if it wasn’t as warm. I think the autumn weather actually made it a little more romantic, so I’m sure it would be just as good in February too!

There are loads of lovely places in the UK to go stay for a romantic break. I like little cottages away in the countryside although town centres can be good if you want to be wined and dined and have plenty of entertainment on your doorstep.
