As a new homeowner myself, I have been learning about smart ways new homeowners can carry-out home maintenance checks on a monthly basis. Before buying my house, I did not think much about the work that goes into ensuring your home continues to stay in tiptop condition throughout the seasons. I have a few projects around the house that I wish to carry out but with winter only a few months away, I am slowly running out of time for outdoor projects but I can still continue with indoor projects. As part of my monthly checks, I make sure to inspect both the sinks and my drainage system, I use a couple of unclogging agents every few weeks and recommend you do the same.

Organize and clean your refrigerator

I know people who’ve never cleaned their fridges since they bought them, I am sure they are meticulous in what they keep in it but I can not imagine that’s good for the fridge. I have an American style fridge freezer which I spent a pretty penny on so I make sure to clean the fridge freezer monthly and a deep clean every six months. What I love about my current fridge is that it has a ‘vacation’ function so it doesn’t use up too much power when I am away for an extended period of time which as a frequent traveller is very handy.

Clean Windows and Seals

I don’t know how often you clean your windows and your window seals but I do them monthly for indoors and quarterly clean by a professional for the outdoors. As the weather changes, I make sure to check my windows and their respective seals both inside and out just make sure there isn’t anything I should be too concerned about. You don’t have to hire a professional cleaner, you can do that yourself but I find it more convenient and I know it lasts.

Check your attic for leaks

Whilst I couldn’t tell you what is in my article apart from spiders, its something I get some of my friends to help me check because especially after it rains, it’s important to check for leaks. If your home starts smelling dump and you can’t locate what’s causing it, its most possibly your attic. Whilst I don’t check if monthly I do have it on my list for that often just in case we had a bad storm and need to check my room is not leaking anywhere.

Do you check your boiler

Even though I have no idea what exactly I should be checking when it comes to my boiler, I do a few things just to make sure it’s still working well. When it comes to home maintenance checks, it’s not always about clearing the gutter every month or cleaning the fridge, their other important and smart tasks that need to be performed. These are things you are aware of but more often than not, most do not do.

• Maintain a monthly maintenance calendar – there are times when you perform your checks and feel something need to be replaced. During these times you want to assess for another month or maybe need a month to save up before you can replace the item. Having a maintenance calendar helps you stay on track of what was checked last time, what needs replacing and what needs monitoring.
• Evaluate your home finances – this might seem obvious to some but often people forget about their finances especially if all the bills are going through just fine. I review my home finances every month, there are months I can pay a little more towards my mortgage and there are times when I don’t need to pay for certain things. I am able to stay on top of my bills because I evaluate my finances monthly.
• Perform a digital declutter – as a social media influencer (or whatever I am), I spend more time online than most people, managing my social accounts and blogging day in and out. It can therefore be hard to have a digital declutter but I do it anyway. I have apps that I use for almost everything but their others which I don’t need anymore. There e-mails that need to be cleared and companies that I need to unsubscribe from. On a monthly basis, I am allocating a couple of hours a weekend to just clean up my digital clutter.
• Clean your carpets – I hoover my carpet every other day because as adults we don’t tend to make too much of a mess. But when it comes to cleaning the carpets, I try and do this every few months but I will spot clean every single month as I am prone to staining them. I recommend performing a deep carpet clean every 3-6 months so your carpets can last longer.
• Dust your surfaces – this I think is something everyone should do every month if not more frequently. Dust gathers up in our homes pretty fast and you can be surprised at how dusty most surfaces in our homes are and I am not talking about the kitchen. Most of us dust our kitchens almost daily but what about other parts of your home?
