With the current state of affairs, many of us are stuck at home for the foreseeable future with no future plans in sight. As a travel blogger, that is just too f-ing depressing so I thought I invite you to travel with me to Spain (virtually). Spain is the fourth largest country (by area) and is located in the southwestern region in Europe. I have been to Spain countless times but I am yet even cover half of the country and I can not wait to explore it all once we are back to normal travel.
As a travel blogger, the recent pandemic has caused me to reassess what travel means to me and how I can best convey my travels to my audience. Since none of us all rushing to travel at present, I thought for every Travel Tuesday, I share a place I have been and loved. This series will run weekly until we resume normal travel or I might continue beyond that too. For this week’s travel Tuesday, I encourage you to travel with me to Spain and see the Kingdom of Spain through my eyes.
Travel Tuesday – Travel With Me To Spain
The kingdom of Spain is the sixth most populous city in Europe and is home to 17 autonomous regions with countless cities all with a diverse range of cultures. I have been fortunate enough to have visited 5 cities: Madrid, Barcelona, Segovia, Toledo and Malaga. For this week’s travel with me to Spain, I will walk you through these five cities, what I loved and would like to revisit once travel resumes.
The idea behind the travel with me (country) series is to give my audience a chance to visit or revisit these countries and cities through my eyes. I am not the ultimate authority on the ‘must visit’ places in these regions but I am sharing places and things that I loved about the destination. For most of us, whenever we think about Spain, we think Barcelona or beaches, I want to show another side.
Barcelona
Barcelona is the cosmopolitan capital of Catalonia and one of the most popular cities in Spain. I have been a number of times and I was fortunate enough to also take my parents on a weekend trip to the city. Everyone who visits Barcelona wants to see the Sagrada Familia and everything Gaudi related. I shared a post many moons ago on 10 things to do in Barcelona.
On all my visits to the city, I have visited the Sagrada Familia, I have done city walks, bus tours and wandered around the city aimlessly. The city is so diverse and vibrant, there was never a dull moment and if you want to visit popular attractions I recommend booking everything in advance. As for where to stay I recommend – Sata Apartments
Madrid
Madrid is the most populous city in Spain and is the second-largest metropolitan city in Europe. The city of Madrid is known for its art and architecture as well as home to the most expensive boulevards and parks in the country. I have only ever been to the city once but I intend to go back and explore more of the gorgeous city and what it has to offer. I would recommend exploring the Prado museum, plaza mayor and El Retiro Park. I put together an ultimate guide to Madrid covering places that I think are a must-visit.
Segovia
Segovia is a historical city located northwest of Madrid in the autonomous region of Castile and León. The city is home to UNESCO world heritage sites and the famous Roman aqueduct with over 163 arches. To visit Segovia, I booked a day trip with getyourguide.com and the journey was about an hour either way. I would recommend either hiring a car and exploring the city at your leisure and going on a day trip which includes a guided tour.
Toledo
Toledo is an ancient city perched on a hill and is known as a city of three cultures thanks to the historical occupation by Christians, medieval Arabs and Jews and the influence seen around the city. The city is known as an imperial city because it was the main venue for the Roman Emperor Charles V and is located in central Spain. Our travel to Toledo from Madrid took about an hour on the tour bus but could be shorter if you drive.
When it comes to visiting Toledo and Segovia but you are short on time, I would recommend a half-day in each town and you can explore a lot of places if you start early enough.
Malaga
Malaga is a port city located in the autonomous region of Andalusia, it is a city known for resorts and sandy beaches. I have not been to Costa del sol in Malaga in over 10 years, the only thing I remember is the lying on the beach with a cocktail. I don’t remember much about the city’s popular attractions outside of the yellow sandy beaches and the cathedral La Manquita. Right before corona happened, we had planned a girls trip back to the city but alas it was not meant to be but I am excited to explore the city in the new year.
As a travel blogger, I love nothing more than being able to share my adventures to some of my favourite places and Spain is one of my favourite countries. So, what did you think of my travel with me to Spain selection? Have you ever been to Spain?
