Over the last 12+ months, it has been even more evident why it is important to treat yourself more often especially working from home has meant even longer hours than before. I am guilty of working from the minute I wake up until the minute I go to bed which is not good for ones health. This is one of the reasons I started and created my new work-week routine which factors in ‘me time’ doing things that I love, are good for my self and are important to me. More often than not, if find out we truly need to take me-time after we experience a total burnout and it doesn’t need to be that way, where our health is concerned, we can be proactive not reactive.
The phrase ‘self-care’ originated as a medical term, long discussed by doctors as a way for patients to treat themselves and stay healthy. Now a buzz word in our busy world, it’s the concept of consciously tending to your needs. That doesn’t just mean healthy eating and yoga classes – self-care can be a lot simpler than that. We’re slowly realising that amongst our never-ending to do lists, we need to find the time to treat ourselves – for our own benefit. I for one have learned the hard way the cost of neglecting to treat yourself more often and it’s not something I am looking to repeat anytime soon because my health both physical and mental are very important.

Why it’s Important to Treat yourself More Often
When I first entered the corporate world as a graduate, I thought for people to know I am actually working, I needed to spending hours on end. I was a people pleaser and found myself working all waking hours and waking up stressed in the middle of the night because I did not do something and would log onto my laptop at 2am to start working again. This was not healthy in the slightest and caused some health issues that I only took notice after it was in full force. Since then, I realise my health is more important than any job and any deadline after all, there is only one me and I should myself more often.
Taking care of yourself should be a top priority and shouldn’t be pushed to the side in favour of doing more tasks or working longer hours in the office. Spending time on your needs can bring happiness and helps you realise what’s important. It’s hugely positive for your mental and physical health and it’s certainly not something you should feel guilty for. Set an example to those around you by paying attention to yourself – they’ll thank you for it. But what are those little treats that you can give yourself to boost your mentality? Here are just a few ideas…
Upgrade your Travel
It’s a small change to make, but spending a little more on your travel is worthwhile if you want to give yourself a little lift. Whether it’s for a long flight or you’re buying a First Class train ticket, make your journey a little less mundane and enjoy a more luxurious experience than you’re used to. You’re guaranteed to arrive more refreshed and feeling in a positive mindset. This is something I have found especially with long flights, I am much happier saving up for a good ticket, enjoy the long flight and starting my vacation on a positive note.
Buy that Coveted Item
Been eyeing up a handbag or pair of shoes for a while now, but never allowed yourself to take the plunge? Just go for it – even if it takes a few months of saving. It’ll give you a much-needed spring in your step as you put said item on display now that we’re able to go out and about again. Don’t feel embarrassed or guilty about spoiling yourself every now and again – it’s a positive thing!
Prioritise ‘Me Time’
Alone time is underrated. It’s such a simple way to fill up your cup and recharge your batteries. Why not have a pamper night or an evening binge-watching your favourite series? Give yourself a mani-pedi or just relax in a hot bath. Go on – you’ll thank yourself for it.
Socialise
Now that lockdown has lifted, get your friends or family together and head to a pub or restaurant. Having a specially cooked meal while surrounded by loved ones is sure to tick that self-care box. And the lack of washing up is a bonus.
Get Outside
Fresh air will do wonders for your mind. Whether it’s a long run or a quick walk, you’ll get home feeling relaxed and replenished. Or even simpler – head to the park to lose your thoughts in a book or your favourite music.
If the last year has taught me anything, its that my health is more important than any work and I should be healthy, happy and in a good mental state to be able to serve others better through my work, being a good friend and being present with my family. There you have it, some of the simple things that you should take on to treat yourself more often.
