Looking back at each decade, I feel both ‘older’ and ‘younger’, I see the change in my features, the change in my way of life, the change in my personality and the experience itched on my face. I am grateful for the life I have lived thus far and excited for the life I am yet to live.

2026 - 39, (Home, England), I am ready for this final year before my 40s but also ready for this next decade.
2016 - 29, (Oslo, Norway), this decade was about self discovery and building the life I dreamt about. The life that I am super proud of and truly grateful to be living. This decade, I built my financial life and in later years choose to heal from the trauma gained in the last decade and now I feel well equipped for the future.
2006 - 19, (Glasgow, Scotland), I thought I was grown (look at the cheekbones 🤣🤣) and ready for the world, chiiiild was I wrong, let’s just say, I am still resolving the trauma the decade brought me but I am grateful because I met my best friends and made decisions for the future I wanted to have. (Spoiler alert - I did better than I dreamed).
1996 - 9, (Home, Zambia) this was my birthday but my little sister insisted she had to be the one in the middle. The only way we knew whose birthday it was, was by standing in the middle but this year I remember baby sister crying her eyes out and refusing 🤨

13 Ways To Beat The Winter Blues

Often after the festive season is over, winter can be such a drag on the mind and emotions. It can be difficult trying to adjust and get into the swing of things after the holidays. Over the last couple of years, I have come up with 13 ways to beat the winter blues.

Winter is one of the most depressing seasons of the year and it can be difficult to beat the winter blues. These simple changes to your lifestyle can help boost your spirits. The 13 Ways to beat the winter blues can help with getting back into the swing of things.

Winter is one of the most depressing seasons of the year and it can be difficult to beat the winter blues. These simple changes to your lifestyle can help boost your spirits. The 13 Ways to beat the winter blues can help with getting back into the swing of things.

In this article, our aim is to help boost your mood with these 13 ways to beat the winter blues.

13 Ways to Beat the Winter Blues

Over the last few days, most of the UK has been a winter wonderland which would make Jack Frost happy. The weather has been absolutely cold and for those suffering from Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) suffer greatly. Most days have been uncharacteristically cold, dark and giving way to dreary days.

In this article, we shared 13 ways to beat the winter blues to help boost your mood. The ideas shared in this article are those we’ve used over the years and work well. With over 2 more months left of winter, we need to find ways to cope with the dreary weather.

  • Spend time outside and stay active

One thing about the cold winter days is you want to spend all day indoors to avoid the cold. But that can become tiring fast and most of us develop cabin fever. Going outside, feeling the fresh air and being active is one way to beat the winter blues.

  • Become a local tourist

Being a national trust member, I get access to so many properties which often offer long estate walks. It is a nice way to stay active and enjoy the great outdoors during winter.

  • Book a holiday

I always book a holiday somewhere warm to have something to look forward to. Counting down days until the next holiday is a great way to beat the winter blues.

  • Stay warm

Winter can be brutal and often we spend more time indoors because outside we can’t keep warm. I have a few go-to winter coats which I fall back on to stay warm outdoors.

  • Eat smarter

One thing that is often encourage during winter is to eat foods that will boost your emotions like chocolate. I don’t know about you but this is a great excuse to eat chocolate often though healthily.

  • Be Sociable

I am fortunate that my sister leaves so close to my home and we meet up almost bi-weekly. This allows me to be more sociable and get some fresh air whilst spending time with loved ones.

  • Volunteer in your community

Sometimes getting outside is not enough, spending time with others can be another way to beat the winter blues. Volunteer at shelters or care homes and spend time with those in need.

  • Establish a Morning Routine

No one wants to wake up early on cold dreary mornings but having a routine you stick to is great for your mental wellbeing. Wake up at the same time every day including the weekend.

  • Let light into your home

When its darker your body feels more depressed than when there is light. Often the curtains wide often and allow as much light into your home as you possibly can.

  • Blast music

Music has been linked to improving people’s moods and I know this is true. Whenever I feel down in the damps, I always put music on and it uplifts my mood almost instantly.

  • Set manageable daily tasks

I am a to-do list orientated person and love nothing more than having a jam-packed list. But I also prefer to pace myself especially when I am feeling down. Having too much on your to-do list can cause more anxiety so it’s important to be pace oneself.

  • Stay hydrated

Though the last thing you want to do is drink water during winter, its even more essential to do so. I prefer to drink hot cocoa and hot chocolate when the weather is damp.

  • Declutter your home

On days when you can’t face the cold but want to remain active without exercising decluttering works. I declutter every 6 weeks around my home and that can help beat the winter blues.

Often after the festive season is over, winter can be such a drag on the mind and emotions. It can be difficult trying to adjust and get into the swing of things after the holidays. Over the last couple of years, I have come up with 13 ways to beat the winter blues.

Great suggestions. Having a morning routine definitely helped me, it makes getting up when it’s dark and miserable more enjoyable.

I love all of these tips and do a lot of them myself. Since the New Year I’ve made a point of going for a walk outdoors every day, no matter what the weather. It really does make you feel so much better (and works towards moving the post-Christmas pounds too!)

I love all of these, and although I adore winter, I can feel myself flagging now. I know it is to do with the fact we have not seen the sun for weeks apart from a very short half hour a few times, and it is mood lowering so badly!

These are great tips. I hate this tie of year, it’s so damp and dreary. Fresh flowers and a nice clean home always make me feel brighter as well as a good old gym session!
