Johannesburg, what can I say!!! It was a last-minute decision to spend my 2 week vacation time there. I had originally planned to go to Zambia first then if finances permitted check out Johannesburg. But the finances did no agree so I had to make a choice and Johannesburg was it. Lucky for me, I have family who live there and were eager for me to visit.
When people think about traveling to South Africa, majority plan for the safari and granted it’s amazing. I didn’t go for the safari or tourism to be honest. I had made a decision a few days before departure to ensure I spend that time I am there with my young cousins, my uncle and auntie.
But my auntie wouldn’t have it that way and we ended up going places. I am grateful to her for taking me to all these places and doing so much for me. My stay in Johannesburg was nothing but the best and I can’t wait to revisit.
Here is a list of places I managed to visit whilst I was in South Africa.
Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton City
Though I can not exactly tell you how we got to Sandton city other than we drove, I do know it’s a lovely town. We did quite a fair bit of shopping there, it’s like being in England just with more sunny days.
Mandela House in Soweto
This is one I was waiting for without evening knowing I was waiting to go. This was the house Mandela and his family lived before he was imprisoned and Winnie put on house arrest. We paid R40 to get into the compound, we had a tour guide who explained the entire history. I was amazed by her knowledge, how much of the house was still with original features, even petrol bomb marks. It’s hard to imagine what life must have been life for Mandela and his family, how they managed to survive.
Union Building in Pretoria
When we drove to the Union Building in Pretoria there was actually a protest against unfair pay to social healthcare workers. My auntie quickly ushered me and her friend back in the car and we went round to the main building where the huge statue of Mandela is located. It is definitely a tourist destination but seemed more popular with Asians than any other race. We did have a wander around the grounds before taking professional pictures that align you nicely with the statue.
Pretoria Zoo
Days after my initial visit to Union Building, my auntie brought me back to Pretoria but this time to visit the zoo. I can only say it was an experience to remember. The zoo is large and has so many animals so we decided to take a cab car across to watch the animals from above. Big mistake as the three of us are all scared of heights, it was a two-minute ride but felt like forever. We got off at the very back of the zoo and had to walk back, it was far but nice. I was able to see so many animals; Kodiak bear, Gorillas, giraffes, hippos, lions, cheetahs and many more. I highly recommend visiting this zoo if you’re ever in Johannesburg or Pretoria.
Monticasino Fourways Johannesburg
Now this casino was nothing like I was imagining to be honest, it exceeded my thinking. Though I have not been to a casino before I did not expect it to be what it was. One lovely evening after my uncle finished work, we headed for Monticasino. Again I can’t tell you how to get there but just know it’s a must see place. Entering the casino was like walking into another city and it had the best restaurants ever. There was so much to see, so much to do but we decided to find somewhere to eat. After our meal, we walked around some more before we went home. I was too mesmerised to take any pictures.
I had such a lovely time in South Africa and I can not wait to go back and visit. Have you ever been to South Africa? If so, where and what was your favourite part?

I’m quite happy to see yet another angle for Africa. Johannesburg really looks and feels like the culmination of every good, natural thing from most western places. That place above really looks like England with more sun, which is something I like.
