The weather starts to warm up, I am thinking of all the road trips we have planned for this year. We concocted a huge Bucketlist that has to be completed before the end of the year. This had me thinking about Car Maintenance specifically Tyre Maintenance, there is nothing worse than busted tyres to ruin a road trip.
As a driver, it is your responsibility to ensure you’ve taken the time before every journey to check your car. Before I begin any journey, I ensure I have checked the tyre pressure, the lights and topped up on fuel. It has become second nature that I check my car without even thinking about it.
Are Your Tyres Fit For A Safe Drive?
Recently I had a punched tyre and thankfully noticed it before I went on a long journey, I was able to get it to a local garage. Thankfully, I did not have to wait long for the tyre to be replaced and I was on my way. But even if I had to order new tyres, I know that in just a few clicks I could book tyres online with Calmac Tyres and make payment when I receive them. This is super convenient especially for those local in Northampton no matter the make, model, or tyre size.
Every car manufacturer has tyre pressure recommendations for each car, taking into account the rim size. Usually, the guides are noted either by the driver or front passenger side door to remind you about the importance of correct tyre size and corresponding pressure needed. It is a safety measure that a driver should observe and adhere to, however, physical inspection is the major element in tyre safety.
Tyre Maintenance – Essential Things To Know
A car manual provides necessary information to follow for your tyres as weather patterns change. Although there seems to be a cautious approach during the colder months nevertheless attention must be given at all times. The recommended minimum tyre thread is 1.6mm however, it would be unwise to allow depreciation of your tyre to this minimum level before corrective measures are taken.
Even without the measuring tool, a simple exercise of using a finger to help detect the tyre is worn out. There’s a small hump within the threads that should not be level around the whole tyre once reached it is time to change that tyres. For the regular road users, before you set off, a quick check around your car for any tyre anomalies is good practice. Any defect must be attended to without delay for safety to yourself and other road users.
Most fuelling stations have pressure machines that are easy to operate should you need to add pressure. Synchronising the tyre pressure with recommended amounts helps in the proper maintenance of your car in general. You don’t want to see your tyre sidewalls touching the ground and compromise the operation of the car. Engine performance is affected as more fuel is burnt to manoeuvre with insufficient tyre pressure.
Braking with worn out tyres can be a nightmare and in colder weather conditions a risky exercise to undertake. Ensure your tyres are good, and keeping your distance will avoid the unwanted accidents should your brakes fail. Therefore, it is important to check your tyres before setting off would prevent potential danger wet weather conditions present.
The wheel alignment is affected by tyres that are at different pressure sizes a smooth drive comes with a uniform all-round wheel balance on your car. That way wear and tear occur uniformly. Driving is enjoyable when observance of tyre conditions and other car rudiments are combined.

You’ve reminded me I need to check my tyre pressure! We have a little hand held device that tells us and then luckily the garage in the village has free air to top them up 🙂
