The rising cost of energy bills has re-prompted a lot of us to find more sustainable ways to save money on energy bills instead of freezing at home. I say re-prompted because the majority of us always do our best to save money every winter and somehow we always need another tip or two to keep the cost of our energy bills low. In recent conversations with friends and family, we talked about £6 or less a day is no longer a thing. We all seem to have smart meters but somehow, this still is not cutting it as much as it did at the beginning and there many reasons for this.
On the internet, there are so many tips and ways to save money on energy bills but I wanted to focus on just three that you can implement. They range from something as simple as using a big flask and filling it up with hot water to installing *infrared panel heaters that are known to help retain the heat far better than traditional heaters that use a lot of energy to heat up a given space.

3 Ways to Save Money on Energy Bills
I am sure we’ve all heard, ‘if you want to save money on energy, wear more clothes aka layers’ and whilst this is sound advice which we should all take on board, I like dressing comfortably and sometimes they are not the warmest of clothes. In my family, we often joke that my home is as warm as the Sahara desert because I seem to always have the heating on and for the most part this is true, however, there a few tricks that I employ and talked about in my ‘window covering ideas post’.
In todays post, I will be sharing 3 ways to save money on your energy bills from inexpensive tips to an incredible investment for your home.
Fill up that flask
So we all know that when we are cold, we often drink and eat warmer/hot foods than any other time of the year. Whilst I am not a big fan of eating soup, I do appreciate the warmth and nutritional value it provides me. However, for me, the one thing I seem to consume the majority of is a surplus of teas and coffees which means I am always running up the kettle and as the old saying, ‘kettles run up your electricity bill’.
To ensure that I am able to continue enjoying as many cuppas as I require in a day, I make a point of boiling a large kettle of water and filling as many flasks as I own in my home. Throughout the day, I will make my drinks from those flasks and often I drink warm water throughout the day so the many flasks fulfil my needs. So to help me reduce how much money I am spending on electricity I try to use less energy by heating up the kettle maximum twice and filling up as many flasks as I can to always ensure I have hot/warm water available to me.
Electric Blanket
As someone born in a warm climate, living in the cold climate like the UK has been a struggle for many a year. I am always cold even during some summer months when it’s meant to be too warm that I don’t need to have the heating on or shower with hot water but I sometimes am/do. One of my best investments as an adult has been an electric blanket for both my bed and as a throw for my living room. You can’t bit the feeling of sleeping on a warm bed when it’s freezing around you. There are certain things in life that you need to splurge on and an electric blanket is one (for me).
There are so many electric blanket options out there so make sure to do your own research on them. I highly recommend if affordable to invest in an electric blanket that you can use in bed but also when chilling on the couch. Alternatively, if electric blankets are too expensive then again, heat up that big kettle and fill up as many hot water bottles as you can and put them in your bed before going to sleep so they keep the bed nice and toasty.
Infrared Panel Heaters
It’s a running joke in our family that if you need to find mum, find the nearest heater and she will be attached to one. I can’t remember how many heaters we’ve bought and used during colder months in the last 20 years. But one thing to note is whilst we’ve loved having these heaters, we have not loved the associated electricity bills that comes from having the heaters on for hours on end because these heaters don’t necessarily heat the room but rather the space of the room you are using it at. This is why I was happy to be introduced to infrared panel heaters because these heaters work differently and can help you save money.
What I love about these types of heaters is, “they are intended to heat people and surfaces directly rather than heating the air in the surrounding area, infrared heaters warm the fabric of the building and items in the room”. The infrared heaters generate heat through radiation, and this is important because “radiant heat does not squander energy by warming the surrounding air; rather, all of the heat is absorbed immediately by the surfaces, objects, and people that are in the vicinity of the heater”. I am completely sold on these heaters and are ready to invest into one or two for my home as well as my parents home too.
And there you have it, 3 ways to save money on your energy bills, make sure to always use a flask instead of constantly heating up the kettle, invest in an electric blanket and thirdly invest in a good quality infrared panel heater that is energy efficient and will save you money in the long run.
