Spring is a few weeks away and now is the perfect time to start thinking about how to prepare your garden for Spring. I won’t claim to have green fingers when it comes to my garden but I certainly try my best at keeping my garden in good condition and recently installed raised beds so I can start planting some vegetables.
Ever since I became a homeowner, I have loved nothing more than taking care of my home but I must admit that the garden is often forgotten and often last to be taken care of. This year is the first year I am prioritising my garden and making sure I plant vegetables that I enjoy eating to hopefully reduce my groceries bill.

How to prepare your garden for Spring
When I was searching for a home to buy a few years ago, one of my requirements was to make sure it had a garden. Knowing I am not good at gardening I wanted it to be something small that I didn’t necessarily need someone to maintain for me. I soon realised that you need to have a knack for gardening which I must admit I am still working on.
Over the last few years, I have made some changes to my garden and fencing around my home that has made a huge difference. One of the truly beautiful sights from my bedroom window is that of a birds nest in a small crevice in my house. I get loads of birds in my yard that I feed them and now I can buy wild bird food for them instead of my usual bread crumbs that I feed them.
In this post, I share some tips and ideas of what I did to revamp my garden and how you can prepare your garden for spring.
First thing I did was to remove the grass and replace with fake grass because my garden had more weeds than grass. These weeds grew faster than anything I ever saw and it was becoming expensive to maintain my small garden.
- Installed raised beds – for someone like me with a small garden, raised beds gives the illusion of a bigger space than their is and also created a space for me to plant whatever I wanted to grow. If you are short of space, consider raised beds.
- Pulled the weeds – once I had the raised beds installed, since I still have the same soil from bed I replaced my grass with fake grass, it means I still have loads of weeds but these are manageable, during winter months, I make sure to pull the weeds, clean up the raised beds and get them ready for planting spring and summer loving plants.
- Fertilise the area – whilst I am not an expert, I researched the fertiliser I needed and went ahead and fertilised the soil I want to plant on ready for spring.
- Don’t forget to rake the leaves – whilst leaves are great for winter protection they need to be removed when preparing the garden for Spring.
One thing I shouldn’t forget to mention is that when it comes to gardening, having the right tools also makes things a lot easier. I was none the wiser in this department and made loads of mistakes but now I think I have the tools that I need to maintain my garden without pulling my hair out. What are some of the things you do to prepare your garden for Spring?
