Girls Day Out Brunching At The Breakfast Club

Brunching at The Breakfast Club in Westgate, Oxford was June’s girls day out option with at Winceats.com, our most recent was for my birthday and we ate at Gilbeys in Eton and for her birthday we celebrated with a night out (ish) in London. Ever since we became friends, we have made every effort to make sure we meet up at least once a month whilst alternating locations. For the June meet up, we decided to visit The Westgate Mall in Oxford and try out at least one restaurant, cafe or caf that we had not yet tried out before.

Since Westgate Oxford was opened back in 2016, we’ve been on a mission to ensure we eat at every single restaurant within the mall. Obviously we had to pause this mission over the last 18 months but now can comfortably resume now that the hospitality industry is finally picking back up and we are here for it. Brunching at The Breakfast Club was a last minute decision because we did not anticipate how busy the restaurants would be a couple days after all restaurants were allowed to be open back up again so we did not book anything in advance – a rookie mistake on our part not to be repeated.

The Breakfast Club is a family run caf business which can be found in multiple locations in the UK including Oxford and London. In fact, there first caf was opened in London and is still open today. Prior to our visit, we had not heard of this chain of Cafs but we were excited seeing the menu and as lovers of all things brunch we were eager. Especially since our visit to Oxford was late morning and in most places we’ve just missed the breakfast menu so brunching at The Breakfast Club sounded like the best option for us.

When Westgate Mall was opened, the most appealing thing about it wasn’t only the incredible selection of shops that they have but rather the roof top restaurants that it donned. So far, we have been to Sticks’n’Sushi, Cinnamon Kitchen, Victors, The Alchemist, Dirty Bones and now The Breakfast Club. We’ve done take aways Shoryu, Nandos, Itsu, Boost and the Cafe:Bar by Benugo and we’ve also tried Rola Wala but this joint closed after a few months in the mall. We had very high expectations when we decided on brunching at The Breakfast Club and below I share our experience.

The best way to arrive at a cafe, restaurant or bar is hungry especially as we always want to eat our money’s worth even if its not an all-you-can-eat type of place. When we arrived at the cafe, it was buzzing and we were here for the energy it brought to the place. We had to reserve a table and waited 30 minutes before a text informed us our table was ready. I think if you ever visit The Breakfast Club, make sure you book in advance as it does get full up pretty quick especially the Oxford branch.

When we arrived, we were informed there were a few items that they did not have on the menu and had run out so we decided to go for the club classic – we both chose the All American which consisted of: Pancake stack, bacon, sausage, crispy homestyle potatoes, eggs & maple syrup, Winsze chose the vegan version and I went for the non-vegan version. The food all in all was ok but I was slightly disappointed by how dry their pancakes were, the presentation wasn’t that great but combined together was a good meal although for £13.50, I personally thing they could do better. All the reviews we read were good so we had high expectations but the pancakes did not live up to the name.

When it comes to the service, I can not fault them for the service they provided to us but seemed to be running behind themselves for a few other customers. One thing we always pay attention to when we visit restaurants or cafes whether we are reviewing them or not is the service they provide to other patrons other than us. When we visited Cinnamon Kitchen when they just opened, we had the worst service ever and another couple too but they seemed to pay attention to larger crowds. For The Breakfast Club, they paid attention to all almost equally except for a few that we noticed were slightly neglected.

From our personal experience the service was 5/5 but through our observations we noticed it wasn’t distributed equally for a few others hence the 4/5 rating. I must reiterate that whilst we enjoyed the food we were slightly disappointed by the pancakes but hope during our next visit (hopefully different branch) we will get a different experience.

Our girls day out are always fun because 90% they are centred around food and catching up on what’s happening in our lives which is the best way to brunch in my opinion. I am excited to share our next eatery that Winsze and I have eaten at. Have you ever heard of The Breakfast Club Caf?
