Eating Out at Gilbey’s in Eton, Windsor

Eating out at Gilbey’s in Eton, Windsor was last month’s girls lunch date location and thanks to Winsze over at winceats.com. For as long as I can remember, we have made a point of meeting up at least once a month and we make this effort because adulting somehow always seems to get in the way. The hospitality industry is on track to bounce back at us eating out at Gilbey’s in Eton is our contribution to the local economy at the same time it allowed us to have our monthly in person girlie catch-up.

Gilbey’s has two branches, in Eton (Windsor) and in Amersham (Buckingham), the Eton branch is located on the high street close to the River Thames in Windsor. The restaurant is situated not far from Windsor Castle but since we were more interested in eating than exploring the town which I hope to do on another day. Apart from being the perfect location to meet up and eat, the Eton branch has opened up a stunning top floor studio suite for those looking for accommodation whilst visiting Windsor.

Going out with my best girls and catching up on all things adulting is my favourite past time – well my second favourite past time after travelling. Whilst I have been wanting to spend more time cooking at home and not spending too much money, I still think it is important to treat yourself every now and again and this is why me and Winsze have made this meet-up and eat-out thing a once a month affair. Eating out at Gilbey’s in Eton was definitely the right choice and have to commend Winsze for finding this amazing location.

Gilbey’s has incredible menus and we choose to eat from their set Lunch & Dinner menu which for 2-courses you pay £23 and 3-courses you pay £30 and we opted for the 3-course menu which was incredible. The set menu does not include drinks so we ordered those separately but I don’t think there are overly priced especially for their location. What I loved about their wine & drinks menu is how extensive it is, if I was not driving I would have loved to order a bottle of wine which again was fairly priced compared to some restaurants we have been to before.

I shall start with a disclaimer, I am that weird person that will order hot soup on a super hot day and that’s exactly what I did even when offered an option to have it cold. As mentioned already, we ordered from the set lunch and dinner menu and opted for the 3-courses instead of 2.

For our starters, we ordered; WATERCRESS, PEA & LEEK SOUP with gorgonzola, pea shoots, seed bread and SUN-BLUSHED TOMATO CHEESECAKE with summer leaves, artichokes, fig balsamic dressing. Both of these choices were absolutely perfect to the point that we wanted to lick our plates, the soup was thick and creamy and the salad was well prepared, the flavours just blended well together. If we had not ordered them from the set menu, these would have cost £9 and £11 respectively and we would have happily paid.

For the mains, we both ordered the same thing because we are soo original with our choices (insert crazy laughter) and we chose the GRILLED SCOTTISH PRAWNS & SQUID paired with Mediterranean vegetables, rouille, fries. The reason we both chose the prawn and squid is because from the available options on the set menu, this is what appealed to us the most and we both love seafood a lot. If we paid for this dish outside the set menu, we would have paid £18.75 which again we would have paid happily as the dish was absolutely amazing, the seafood was well cooked, the vegetables were a great accompaniment and the chunky chips hit the spot.

For our starters, we ordered VANILLA & ELDERFLOWER PANNA COTTA strawberries, honeycomb and DUO OF ICE CREAMS salted caramel, vanilla. Whilst I do not regret choosing the duo ice creams, I do wish I had chosen either the Eton MESS or the panna cotta which looked absolutely delicious. However, the starter and mains were too filling that I just needed something to wash down the amazing food that was yet to digest. If we had to pay outside the set menu, we would have had to pay £8.50 (panna cotta) and £7 (ice cream) for the panna cotta I would have paid that but not the ice cream, I think the price was too steep for two scoops.

Finally for the drinks, I went for a cider to accompany my meal and Winsze as usual chose a Raspberry Prosecco because she is a wine addict with a wine certificate. Overall, I think we made the right choice going for the set menu, it was more cost effective and thanks to winceats.com for treating me and making this a birthday treat to me. I loved the ambiance of Gilbey’s restaurant, the staff were very attentive and happy to recommend the best items on the menu. At the time of our visit, you needed to wear a mask in the restaurant but can take it off at your table. They offered only table service and bar service was closed which worked best for us. Overall eating out at Gilbey’s in Eton Windsor, was a great choice and highly recommend them.
