With Christmas fast approaching, many are making arrangements for grandparents to spend Christmas with the family and I thought I share the Christmas gift ideas for grandparents with mobility issues. I recently shared a post on how to make your home more elderly-friendly and there is no better time than now to ensure that your home will be ready to receive the grandparents or for some, to receive elderly parents who might have some mobility issues. Christmas is a great time to gather as a family and spend as much time together as possible and your home shouldn’t be a hindrance.

Growing up, I don’t remember much about how we adapted the house for my grandparents apart from ensuring that none of the furniture was too low to the ground. Everything else we did for our grandparents when they were alive and I have great memories of my paternal grand-dad teaching me how to count. My niece and nephew are lucky to still have their grandparents as well as a great-grandparent and this gave me the idea to share Christmas gift ideas for your grandparents with mobility issues because I know their great-grandparent has mobility issues.

If this year has taught us anything, it’s to be grateful for everything you have and I am grateful to still have my maternal grandmother. I make it a point to call her as often as I can and to support her financially since that’s all I can do as she lives on another continent. We are thankful that she is still agile but I know she does have some ‘old’ age-related issues with her mobility. I always have to remind her that she is no spring chicken but she just laughs it off and we love her for it.

When it comes to gifting our family members, I always think it’s best to gift them something practical that they can use in their daily lives. There is no point me gifting my grandma an iPhone as she won’t use it, but a simple Nokia 3310 would be ideal as it’s something she can easily use and is not too complicated to operate. I also believe in gifting people something meaningful that whenever they look at the item, they will think of you and not in a selfish way but in a memorable and loving way.

If your grandparent(s) have mobility issues you’re definitely going to need to consider installing a stairlift for them or moving them to a bungalow type home. If installing a lift at the moment is not financially feasible, you can look to adapt your downstairs or installing another handrail in your or their home.

Tipping Kettle for those with limited mobility

Until recently, I did not know that there was such a thing as a tipping kettle, I saw one at a friends house and thought what an amazing gift. Boiling water is a dangerous affair, I have seen too many accidents in some assisted living accommodations due to the kettle being too heavy for the resident. It makes sense to buy something as practical as a tipping kettle to help those with limited mobility like the grandparents. I bought my parents a hot cup water dispenser kettle which they have a love-hate relationship with – boils limited water but water boils really fast.

Anti-slip Mats and Handrails

Working in a care home many years ago, I remember how useful and practical anti-slip mats were for elderly residents as well as those with limited mobility. I myself I have found myself falling in a slippery tub whilst on holiday and it was absolutely painful, I can only imagine for the grandparents how much more it is for them. Anti-slip mats and affordable and practical for visiting grandparents and also something they can have in their home all the time. Handrails are also practical gifts that you can install in their homes so they don’t have to struggle when getting out of the tub or walking up the stairs.

Cosy Slippers and Booties

Like my mother, I am a sucker for cosy slippers and booties especially this time of year when its absolutely freezing and I need to keep my forever cold feet warm. For cosy slippers they don’t have to have mobility issues, everyone can have them whether young or old and I think they are such a practical gift especially for this time of year. Since I have cold feet I wear mine year-round and for the elderly they easily get cold so this is something they can use year-round as well.

There are so many wonderful and practical gifts you can gift the grandparents especially those with limited mobility. When thinking about buying presents for the family, I think it’s important to ensure our gifts are inclusive of other family members who the everyday gift won’t do.
