Looking back at each decade, I feel both ‘older’ and ‘younger’, I see the change in my features, the change in my way of life, the change in my personality and the experience itched on my face. I am grateful for the life I have lived thus far and excited for the life I am yet to live.

2026 - 39, (Home, England), I am ready for this final year before my 40s but also ready for this next decade.
2016 - 29, (Oslo, Norway), this decade was about self discovery and building the life I dreamt about. The life that I am super proud of and truly grateful to be living. This decade, I built my financial life and in later years choose to heal from the trauma gained in the last decade and now I feel well equipped for the future.
2006 - 19, (Glasgow, Scotland), I thought I was grown (look at the cheekbones 🤣🤣) and ready for the world, chiiiild was I wrong, let’s just say, I am still resolving the trauma the decade brought me but I am grateful because I met my best friends and made decisions for the future I wanted to have. (Spoiler alert - I did better than I dreamed).
1996 - 9, (Home, Zambia) this was my birthday but my little sister insisted she had to be the one in the middle. The only way we knew whose birthday it was, was by standing in the middle but this year I remember baby sister crying her eyes out and refusing 🤨
1988 - 9 months, (Chililabombwe, Zambia) although my mother looks tired and traumatised😟, I know I was loved and happy.

How to give your garden fence an uplift.

Since becoming a homeowner last year, there are so many things I have had to pay attention to including how to give your garden fence an uplift. When I first moved into the property, I did not mind much that I barely had a fence and it was easier to people watch. That was until I realised the opposite was true, people walking past my home could watch me and that unsettled me especially after catching an old man peeping into my home I knew it was time to fence up and increase my privacy.

A fence is supposed to define the borders of your home, increase privacy and safety and can add personality to your outdoors. As an extension to your property, it should not only be functional but also stylish, or at least, in-line with your property’s style. The types of fence you can have is all up to your, if like me you want a 3/4 length fence or maybe you want something higher so no one can look into your property. Today, I’ve partnered up with Speedy Fixings, UK tooling and fixings specialists, to share some ideas on how to give your garden fence an uplift.

How to Give your Garden Fence an Uplift

I’ve been staring out the window at our garden fence for a few weeks now, thinking “what can I do to make it look better?” It’s just the fence, you might say. However, if you’ve ever looked at a neighbour’s fence that is old, rotten and completely falling apart, you know you are judging them (and their terrible fence). Whilst I don’t want to come off as judge-y, when it comes to garden fences I can be a little especially if it connects to my property as well. Thankfully, the demarcations on either slide of my property as meant I can fence up my property without infringing on my neighbours.

Since having an unwelcome creeper through my window last year, I hired a local company who were able to erect a beautiful fence that I know will last me a long time. So, how can you give your garden fence an uplift? In this post we discuss some of the ideas that you can utilise with your own fence from giving it back its original shine to you showing off your personality in the type of fence you install for your garden. Sharing in the comments below how you would give your garden fence an uplift as we love learning how others are doing it.

Make it last longer.

The team at Speedy Fixings recommends installing post supports to your garden fence to make it stronger, more stable and, in turn, make it long lasting. ‘Speedy Fixings’ fence post shoes’ will not only support your garden fence but will also protect it from water, insect and fungal damage.

Show off your personality.

Grab the paintbrush and it’s time to paint your garden fence in your favourite colour. You can show off your personality and paint it with different colours and patterns. You might choose to have a bold and bright garden fence to make your home stand out or a more modest and neutral garden fence to keep it standard. You can’t go wrong with a white picket fence!

Bring back its original shine.

“You might prefer a low-maintenance wooden garden fence, and that’s okay too. Staining the wooden fence to give the wood its original look, it’s a great way to give your wooden garden fence a refreshed look.” says Time with Thea in a recent blog post, and I couldn’t agree more! Sometimes all it takes is a little bit of shine to make old furniture, or in this case, garden fences look brand-new once again.

Give it more than one function.

There are plenty of ways of making your garden fence multi-functional. As Sparkles and Stretchmarks mentions, “horizontal garden fences can act as the perfect vertical storage solution for pots and garden utensils.” Plus, by adding colourful items to your garden fence, you are also adding an extra decorative element to your garden.

And there you have it, our tips on how to give your garden fence an uplift. What are some of your tips and for those who’ve revamped their garden fences, what’s your favourite thing about your garden fence?

My mum just had a new one fitted and now it needs to be painted with weather proof paint. I am hoping my son will do it for her!

Great tips! I wish we could have a fence in our front garden as we always have people looking in and it is really unnerving!

Our fence posts do need changing especially as they have been battered with the UK weather lately. Thanks for sharing some ideas on how to make them look better, I need to implement this

We have a lot of fencing because of the shape of our garden and we’re in the process of swapping out some of them as the old ones aren’t in the best condition and we’re going for slightly higher ones x

We always make sure we have durable fences. That way they last longer than the cheaper options. We painted ours with wood preserver only.

We have a wall one side of our garden and fence on the other, we are looking at painting them but need the rain to go away before we can do this properly. I also love the wall ornaments you can get now

I would like to have a garden fence as pretty as the ones you posted in this article. Our house has concrete fences around and I find it boring to look at. I will check with an architect friend and ask for suggestions on how he can make it look prettier.
