Looking back at each decade, I feel both ‘older’ and ‘younger’, I see the change in my features, the change in my way of life, the change in my personality and the experience itched on my face. I am grateful for the life I have lived thus far and excited for the life I am yet to live.

2026 - 39, (Home, England), I am ready for this final year before my 40s but also ready for this next decade.
2016 - 29, (Oslo, Norway), this decade was about self discovery and building the life I dreamt about. The life that I am super proud of and truly grateful to be living. This decade, I built my financial life and in later years choose to heal from the trauma gained in the last decade and now I feel well equipped for the future.
2006 - 19, (Glasgow, Scotland), I thought I was grown (look at the cheekbones 🤣🤣) and ready for the world, chiiiild was I wrong, let’s just say, I am still resolving the trauma the decade brought me but I am grateful because I met my best friends and made decisions for the future I wanted to have. (Spoiler alert - I did better than I dreamed).
1996 - 9, (Home, Zambia) this was my birthday but my little sister insisted she had to be the one in the middle. The only way we knew whose birthday it was, was by standing in the middle but this year I remember baby sister crying her eyes out and refusing 🤨
1988 - 9 months, (Chililabombwe, Zambia) although my mother looks tired and traumatised😟, I know I was loved and happy.

SEVEN EASY DIY TIPS TO ADD LIFE TO A LIVING ROOM

Sponsored

With Spring in the air, I thought it prudent to share easy DIY tips to add life to a living room because if your living room is like mine – its where everything happens. Over the last couple of months I have been spending more time in my living room than any room in my home. Even though I have an office I have found myself dragging my laptop to my living room as its one of my favourite rooms in my home. It was the first room I decorated after I became a first time homeowner even before I decorated my bedroom.

Your living room is the first place where  your friends and family members first set their sights on upon entering your home.It also happens to be your personal space to unwind and relax at the end of a hectic day. That said, it is only natural that you would want this important area of the house to look as presentable as possible, without having to raise a sweat. These seven simple DIY tips to add life to your living room will not only challenge your crafting skills, but will also give your living room an elegant look.

SEVEN EASY DIY TIPS TO ADD LIFE TO A LIVING ROOM

When I was young, it was my responsibility to clean the living room, dust the accessories, mop and shine the floors and keep the room presentable. I took my role very seriously so much that every single week I moved the furniture around until I found a position for each item in the living room that I felt it belonged to. My mum used to joke that when I have my own home my furniture will stand on stones due to the constant moving and shuffling I did.

Fast forward to day, my living room has experienced 4 changes since I bought my home a year ago. What can I say, I love decorating, switching things up and making sure my living room is a zen place as I spend a lot of time there. Whilst I am not DIY savvy, I thought I share these seven easy DIY tips to add life to a living room. These tips are super simple and though some require a bit of work, they can be done and will change up your space for the better.

Change the cushions

One of the most popular and simple methods to update a living room is to replace the cushions. This can provide an instant uplift as cushions come in a range of bright colors and designs. You can also bring about a quick change by changing the cushion covers for different seasons or whenever you choose to repaint the walls.

Install new decor

There are a number of ways to spruce up the living space through small DIY hacks without having to shell out loads of cash. Your living room decor can be easily switched up through introduction of an element of greenery like plants, flowers etc. Another awesome way to add life to your space is to buy small pieces of furniture like a blanket ladder, or incorporating pieces of art.

Twist the rugs

For an instant mini-makeover, switch *carpets around. If your rug is placed centrally in the living room, lay it off the centre. You can turn it vertically rather than horizontally to give a different perspective. Even a short distance from where it now is will give the room a nice twist.

DIY wallpaper

The walls of your living room form a part of your day to day life, so why not apply some wallpaper that will leave a good impression on the guests? With so many patterns available, you can dabble and experiment till you get your required shade. All you need is a few hours of time, plenty of tape and an imaginative mind.

Accent wall mirror

You can never go wrong with a mirror, if you want something that can catch everyone’s eye. Use multiple compact mirrors to create a centerpiece that will stand out on any wall of the living room.

Add vintage looking furniture

There are hundreds of crafty ideas online, and all you have to do is to pick up and choose the one you like. A nice DIY coffee table can make a great addition to the living room. You can make one with door slabs, windows, wine crates or even suitcases. You just need nails, screws and a flair for vintage furniture.

Rearrange the furniture

Set the tone for an inviting conversation by arranging the furniture of your lining room to maintain a sense of intimacy and balance at the same time. The sofa should have two chairs facing each other at the end of the coffee table is ideal. Do not push all the furniture against the walls, instead float it away from them if you want the place to look bigger.

I hope you find these tips useful, I love updating my living room to match the season, how I am feeling and sometimes just spruce up the room just because.

Thanks for these tips! I often change the cushions and the soft furnishing and frame but never thought about rearranging the furniture. I need to do this next time

We haven’t changed our living room for a couple of years and it could probably do with a refresh, as like you we spend so much time there. Mich x
