Howto Hygge your Home this Autumn|13 Easy Tips

Are you looking for ways on how to Hygge your home this autumn? Autumn is often associated with cosiness, whether at home or how our dress. We’ve thought of 13 simple ways on how to Hygge your home this autumn and make it cosy. Hygge is not something that can be bought, it is something that you create with the things you bought.

Hygge, pronounced as hoo-gah is the Danish word which I personally equate to ‘enjoying the simple things in life’. With these 13 easy tips, we hope to help you Hygge your home this autumn. The Danes are known to be the happiest persons alive because for them it’s all about appreciating the moment. Why? Because for the Danes, Hygge is a way of life.

13 Easy Tips to Hygge to your Home this Autumn

Often, people talk about enjoying the moment, Danes have the ability to recognise, be present and enjoy it too. Back at the end of 2016, the Danish Hygge took the world by storm, everything from food to home decor was advertised as Hygge. I have compiled 13 easy tips to Hygge your home this autumn and grouped them into five categories.

Lighting

There is nothing that makes your home look cosy than the type of lighting you have. In order to Hygge your home this autumn, you need to choose the right style of lighting. The idea is to make your home feel more cosy and welcoming. We don’t feel you need to spend lots of money to make this happen but use what you have. We suggest,

  • Fireplace – if your home already has one, switch off the lights and light the fireplace. Allow your fireplace to illuminate the home making it more cosy and romantic too. Set up nice fluffy blankets in front of the fireplace and enjoy a nice hot drink.
  • Dimmed lighting – not everyone has fireplaces, therefore, dimmed lighting works too. If you’re able to dim your lights in your home, that too creates a feeling of cosiness. Most homes have dimmed lighting in living rooms and bedrooms which are the essential rooms or cosiness.
  • Candles – for those of us with neither a fireplace nor dimmed lighting, candles are the best option. This time of year, it makes sense to light candles and let that illuminate the room. We bought some *Bisou Candles which are natural soy wax candles. I hate nothing more than candles that smell bad when they finish.

Home Furnishings

During the colder months, nothing is more satisfying than returning to a cosy home. Every day after work this autumn, when I return home, first thing is to wear warm pyjamas. After that, I literally spend hours cuddled up on my sofa with a thick blanket covering me. Being that cosy is second to none, some of the items we recommend include;

  • Textured pillows – whether in the living room or the bedroom, textured pillows add a little something to the decor. It is warm, inviting and not too overpowering, it can match most home designs.
  • Rugs – I am fortunate that except for the bathroom, my entire home is carpeted. Having cold feet, I hate being cold so often I buy rugs for the living room and bedroom.
  • Sofa blankets – the best invention after bread and butter. I have various types of sofa blankets to match my mood and season. During autumn and winter, I often bring out my thick and super warm blanket.

Nights In

The beauty of Hygge is that it can be enjoyed anywhere and with anyone. It is about the feeling and appreciating the moment as it happens. There are several ways you can enjoy Hygge, when you’re home we recomend,

  • Movie night – there is nothing more Hygge like than watching a movie as a family. Dim the lights, put on your favourite movie and dress warmly and snuggle up.
  • Family catchup – you can also enjoy Hygge by catching up with the family. Discussing both big and small topics happening in your life, being present in the moment.

Food and Drinks

When it comes to food and drink, Hygge for me becomes interchangeable with togetherness. Food has a way of bringing friends and families together maybe for breakfast or dinner. Regardless of which, make Hygge but of your everyday life as you enjoy your foods and drinks. Some of the food and drinks that bring Hygge as they are include;

  • a slice of cinnamon apple crumble
  • Hot cocoa is always a winner
  • A nice cup of hot chocolate
  • Warm glass of milk

Mental Health

One of the most important accepts of Hygge that I have learnt is improving your mental well being. During the mental health week, awareness is raised to bring attention to the neglected mental health area. Not that Hygge will cure you of your mental health, but its essence will support your mental well being.

Hygge is all about being present and enjoying that moment, this is a great tool for those with mental health. Not everyone can appreciate the moment when so much is going on nor do they want not to enjoy it. It is important to understand that, its ok not to be ok, recognise that within yourself. Being well within oneself is all about accepting that sometimes bad days will just be bad days.

When you start practising Hygge in your everyday life, it will become part of your lifestyle. Appreciate the moment, be present in the moment and enjoy the moment is Hygge. We hope you utilise these 13 ways to Hygge your home this autumn.

    Yes! I love this so much! I saw a commercial the other day about hygge and realized that how I pronounced it in my head was NOT even close! These are some great tips. I am a big fan of burying myself under a pile of blankets, especially when the temperature drops!

    Hygge seems to be such a big thing doesn’t it – I have to admit I’ve read a little on it but never managed to transition it over into my home – I should definitely have a think about it though as it seems calming and relaxing.
