Dry skin, chapped lips? Yep, winter, the season we love to hate but don’t worry we have compiled 5 simple winter skincare rules to put into practice now. Every new season is an opportunity to adapt your skincare routine to one that your skin will thank you for and is weather appropriate. Whether you are transitioning from autumn to winter or spring to summer, you have to make sure the products you use are those that match your skin type, it will love and thank you for in the long run.
During the winter months, your skin will be exposed to the elements and will need a lot of hydration, moisture and less of exfoliation also please stay away from excessive oils. People often think because it’s cold they need to double down on thick moisturisers and oils but what all this does especially for those with poor skincare routine is clogging up the pores and making it hard for nutrients (in the products you use) to be absorbed into the skin. To avoid this happening, I recommend using a light cleanser twice a day (morning and evening) to unclog the pores.

The skincare rules shared in this post are those that every skin type will love during the winter months.
Simple Winter Skincare Rules to put into Practice Now!
Having a good skincare routine is so important but more so as we get older where our skin needs a little more help. Natural elements like hyaluronic acid start to wither down and we need to use products that will bring them back to plump up the skin and keep it looking young and fresh without Botox. But a good skincare is not just about what products you are using but also your diet and current lifestyle. If you nurture good health habits, this will be reflected in how vibrant your skin looks.
Over the last 10 years, I have invested in good quality products that support my combination skin and keeps my face feeling and looking young. Often people over complicate things we it comes to putting together a good daily skincare routine that everyone should follow. I follow three basic principles; CTM – cleanse, tone and moisturise, this is all you need. Work out what skin type you are (oily, dry or combination) then choose the right cleanser, toner and moisturise for your skin type. Also, don’t forget about the serum.
During the winter months, you follow the same basic principles and then incorporate the following 5 simple winter skincare rules and put them into practice now.
Hydration
People often forget to give hydration the medal it solely deserves because one thing to remember is humans are 53% water and as we sweat, pee and such, we loose some of that water and it needs to be replenished. Hydration is so important for you not only for your face but your digestive system as well. I used to be so bad when it came to drinking water but now I drink at least 2 litres a day and my face thanks me for it.
When you cells are getting enough hydration, they are able to function better, carry nutrients in and excrete any toxins out. Your face’s elasticity will reduce the appearance of your wrinkles – free botox without even trying. Hydrated skin looks young, fresh and rejuvenated so make sure to give hydration the medal it deserves and make sure to drink enough water daily.

Multi-masking
The proven theory behind multi-masking is that you are able to target areas of your face that require different needs. For example, I have combination skin with my t-zone being oily and my cheeks being dry – using a hydrating mask for my entire face is not good for my t-zone same as using an oil absorbing mask is good for my t-zone but not my cheeks. And this is where multi-masking comes in allowing you to use different masks at the same time for different areas of your face.
Over the last few months we have been spending a lot of time indoors especially since its cold outside but that doesn’t mean the elements won’t impact you. Being stuck indoors means you now have to contended with the heat from the radiators which can strip nutrients from your skin and this is why I recommend multi-masking and I practice what I preach. Every single night before bed I wear a sheet mask and just cut out the areas it doesn’t benefit etc.
Reduce on Exfoliation
Exfoliation is good for your skin even more so in winter than any other time of the year because your skin is exposed to hot weather indoors and cold weather outdoors. This means, your cells will die faster in winter and you need to exfoliate to remove the dead cells away. But, it is also importance to remember that too much exfoliation will strip your skin of its natural oils which can lead to breakouts.
This is why it’s recommended to reduce the frequent of exfoliation to twice a week, this is long enough to remove the dead cells, for moisturisers to do their work and allow the new cells to absorb the nutrients from the products you apply. I personally exfoliate once or twice a week because I don’t want to over do it but also don’t want to obstruct the new cells from being healthy and receiving the nutrients that they need.

Incorporate Serum
Ever since I got introduced to serums many moons ago, they are a constant feature in my daily skin routine and I have tried a number of them and found for mu combination skin – my skin prefers ginseng or those with hyaluronic acid in them plus Vitamin C. Serums prevent oxidative damage from UV light that can lead to wrinkles and premature ageing. I use the serum twice daily after I cleanse and tone my face but before I apply moisturisers. For those who were sunscreen often, this should be applied before you apply your sunscreen.
Moisturise
Moisturising your skin especially during winter is so important, it protects the skin from irritation and dryness which can lead to acne and breakouts. When you moisturise you help maintain skin and thereby keeping your cells healthy and when they are healthy you skin can look and feel rejuvenated. Most of the moisturisers can also help conceal blemishes which if you have skin problems is a good thing.
Moisturisers prevent you skin from drying out by withholding the water in the outer part of your skin. Whilst there is conflicting information on how often you should moisturise your face, I personally do it daily but you can opt for every other day depending on your skin type as well as preference. During winter months its important to ensure that you don’t use moisturisers that will clog up the pores and keeping impurities within your skin causing breakouts.
And there you have it, the simple winter skincare rules to put into practice now and I mean right now. I take pride in taking care of my skin whether is drinking 2 litres of water a day or moisturising, I invest time and money for the health of my skin.

I am on the hunt for a good moisturizer and something that reduces the redness of rosacea. Everything I look at seems a little expensive, but I know I need a good skin care routine. I am not getting any younger.

It seems like the key to winter skin care is hydration of some sort. Whether you are just moisturizing or reducing the amount of exfoliation to preserve your natural oils and water, or just drinking more water, it seems that staying “wet” is the biggest key.

These are amazing tips. I have been using a lot of tissue oil on my stretch marks but I haven’t been exfoliating, I guess I need to, to avoid the skin from clogging.
