Weekend getaway to Brno was both scary and exciting. I had to wake up really early since my flight was at 7:30 and honestly as much as I wanted to make use of my day off from work I also value my sleep but one must do what one must.

99% of my getaways this year will be with Wizz Air as they offer affordable (cheaper) flights than providers and fly to a lot of Eastern European destinations that you wouldn’t normally consider as a getaway places except for Prague, Bucharest and Budapest.
I had made a decision last year to ensure 2016 is a year I travelled more than ever before. I am blessed with a good paying job with some nice benefits and then on top I have this blog which has become a source of travel income and opportunities. When I was booking my trip to Praha (Prague) with my friend I decided to check out other places I could visit and Brno jumped at me, now it’s not a place I had heard of or even knew where it was but I checked it and found me a £15 return ticket as you must know by now my spontaneous self bought the ticket without a second thought and only later I learned it was in Czech Republic same as Praha.

I always book airport transfer so upon arrival in Brno my driver was waiting, he drove me to my hotel which was less than 30 minutes from airport. Brno is second largest city in Czech Republic but the airport was smaller than Kaunas, Lithuania which is basically saying its small. Because I arrived early I couldn’t check out the hotel had strict checking in time policy so I went for a wander around the city.
I quickly familiarized myself with the transport system. I had taken a bus to the castle then walked back to the hotel with my google maps. Then to explore the rest of the town I took the tram to Nove Sady which is basically near the town centre, from there I was able to walk to the Capuchin Crypt & church though both were closed when I arrived I would have loved to see the mummies. To the left of the church you can see St. Peter and St Paul’s cathedral and before that you walk into bishop’s court which is a beautiful enclosure. To the right of bishop’s court is the cabbage market (also called the vegetable market) though done for the day when I got there, it supplies fresh fruits and vegetables. I walked around then returned to the cabbage market and to its left you can walk an alley way that takes you to the old town hall which has beautiful small towers with the middle one slightly bent it is thought the architect did that on purpose.

From the old town hall turn right at end of alley and walk further into the town centre where you will find the phallic clock which if I am honest looks out-of-place and nothing like a clock but more like a huge bullet or something not to be mentioned on the blog (😂😂📷).

I was able to see quite a bit in the 4 hours that I explored Brno and I think you can certainly do it in a few hours. Should you get a chance definitely add Brno to your list of places to visit in Eastern Europe.

I’ve never heard of this place but it looks great. Was it somewhere you could take kids or is it more of an adults only place? Only asking because we love to go travelling and this looks like it’s full of history and not too busy, which would be great for my kids.
Miranda says
I would take my kids there is I had any, it’s very friendly and easy to get to

I too couldn’t have told you where Brno was but my brother used to live in the CR! He lived near Prague in Piltzen. It seems a lot like this – to me it felt about 30 years behind somehow? Everything was a bit dated. Beautiful but like big modern glass buildings hadn’t made it there yet. Except for maybe that big ‘bullet?!’ Haha!!
Miranda says
Hahahaha the big bullet had made it but yes it does feel behind the times lol
Emmmmerz says
I am so very jealous of your travels! My husband and I hope to be stationed in Europe next.
(I wonder if I could convince him to get a smaller version of the clock, bwahahaha.)
Miranda says
Hahahaha lol I wonder what he would say
Melanie says
Gorgeous photos. How do you pronounce BRNO? I’ve never even heard of it before. Looks like an awesome time!
Miranda says
Thanks Melanie it’s pronounced ber-no lol
Ruxandra says
Love the cathedral! Actually, having grown in Eastern Europe myself, I have not visited much there 🙁 I’ve been living in the Western Europe for some years and focused much more on this area. I recently realised the beauty of those countries and decided to give them a try!
Miranda says
Eastern Europe is gorgeous and though western is too it feels like eastern has more history maybe due to the Soviet Union
