Looking back at each decade, I feel both ‘older’ and ‘younger’, I see the change in my features, the change in my way of life, the change in my personality and the experience itched on my face. I am grateful for the life I have lived thus far and excited for the life I am yet to live.

2026 - 39, (Home, England), I am ready for this final year before my 40s but also ready for this next decade.
2016 - 29, (Oslo, Norway), this decade was about self discovery and building the life I dreamt about. The life that I am super proud of and truly grateful to be living. This decade, I built my financial life and in later years choose to heal from the trauma gained in the last decade and now I feel well equipped for the future.
2006 - 19, (Glasgow, Scotland), I thought I was grown (look at the cheekbones 🤣🤣) and ready for the world, chiiiild was I wrong, let’s just say, I am still resolving the trauma the decade brought me but I am grateful because I met my best friends and made decisions for the future I wanted to have. (Spoiler alert - I did better than I dreamed).
1996 - 9, (Home, Zambia) this was my birthday but my little sister insisted she had to be the one in the middle. The only way we knew whose birthday it was, was by standing in the middle but this year I remember baby sister crying her eyes out and refusing 🤨
1988 - 9 months, (Chililabombwe, Zambia) although my mother looks tired and traumatised😟, I know I was loved and happy.

5 Items every Woman should have in their Closet

As a shopaholic who is busy decluttering her clothing, I thought I share 5 items every woman should have in their closet because, why not. It is important to have items that you can utilise all year round that are a staple in your closet. Only 5 items that you are totally proud of other than your pyjamas and dresses with pockets, because you know, women love their pockets, there is something about them. I would quite happily buy a more expensive version of the dress I love because it has pockets, it’s woman’s logic.

Whenever I declutter my wardrobe, I always pay space attention to the items I am either donating, repurposing or throwing away. If the item is on my ‘must have’ in a woman’s closet then I write that down so that I don’t forget to replace it. I think it is so important to declutter as often as possible to create room for items that you love and actually use than filling it up with items that don’t even serve you (Mario Kondo said that). I am excited to share the 5 items evert woman should have in their closet, hope you agree.

5 Items every Woman should have in their Closet

I am a shopaholic saver if that makes any sense, when I was younger I used to go cloth shopping every single month. Sometimes I actually didn’t need anything but shopping is such a social event so even when I knew I didn’t have to buy anything I still did because I lusted after that cute bag, the nice ankle boots and ooo those skinny jeans were totally made for me (they weren’t) but it made me justify the purchases.

Now, I am more focus on saving money than spending it but even then it doesn’t mean once in a while I can’t treat myself to a nice something. But, I have a rule, I would rather spend a little bit more money on quality items than buy cheap ones for the sake of buying the item. Paying a little bit more into something you wear all the time is an investment, but for something you will wear once or twice a year – that is a waste of money, don’t do it.

So, what 5 items every woman should have in their closet?

Every one needs Denim

I don’t know about you but I live in my denim (obviously not literally) and I love it. I wear more denim jeans than other items in my closets, denim is easy to style and can be paired with a lot of items. With denim cheap is not your friend, denim items are an investment – I have had one pair of denim jeans for 10+ years and still wear it now. So, when buying denim, make sure you spend a little bit more than you normally would as its an investment.

Every woman needs a pair of nice denim, black or blue is often what we opt for but you can choose other colour. I have both blue and black and I am getting good wear out of them. I have bought jeggings (jeans + leggings) and they have been great for a few months until they rip from rubbing and I need to buy new ones a few months later – this was not a wise investment.

Basic Tees

If you looked into my closet right now, you will be surprised by how many basic tees I have in there. I love basic tees and I do recommend having them because they are easy to dress and you can pair them with everything. Of late I have been replacing the old tees I have with some vegan versions that I picked up from shops like H&M which are super soft.

Depending on your style, you can either dress the basic tees up or down and for me in our current situation, I am dressing them down over lounge wear. I just love that I can wear my basic tees anywhere from being at home or running errands to catching with friends and all I do is pair it with mum jeans and trainers.

Faux Leather Jacket

I don’t care what your style is but faux leather jacket definitely needs to be in your wardrobe. My faux leather jacket are my go to outerwear whether I am going on a date or just grabbing some items in town. During early Spring and late autumn, I often call upon my faux leather jacket to keep me warm and most times I layer it with a small cardigan inside for added warmth.

Faux leather jackets are so easy to style, I often go for black or dark red cover as I have more options on what I can pair the jacket with. Currently in my wardrobe I need to replace the faithful black faux leather jacket as it is on its last legs and I am hoping to find one that I can add to my wardrobe as it is an essential item in my books.

Tote Bag

Maybe its a woman thing but I have a lot of bags that I love but there is one tote bag that I often reach for when I am in a rush or need to do some errands. I have bags that are for special occasions but this one tote bag does everything, it is big enough for shopping but small enough to be taken for a drink with the girls. Often when I am buying tote bags I often reach for either black tote or a nude as again, I can pair them with a lot of outfits.

Tote bags are an essential items and should be in every woman’s closet because this is your ‘carry it all’ bag. The amount of times I lose things in this tote bag is incredible but it’s also the bag I carry for the ‘just in case’ items that I can’t possible carry by hand or in a small bag.

Flats & Heels

Depending on your preference I recommend you have a favourite pair of flats and a nice pair of heels. I remember the days I used to wear a heels, even though I built up quite a collection when I was at university, I still almost always gravitated towards a black platformed pair. There is just something about having that special shoe that elevates your mood no matter the situation.

It is also the same thing when it comes to flats, I wear more flats these days than heeled shoes because I can’t drive in heels. I don’t know when I made the switch from constantly wearing heels to almost always reaching for my flats whether I am going out with the girls or maybe Ia m going on a date. You can never go wrong with investing in a good pair of flats or a good quality pair of heels.

And there you have it, the 5 items that every woman should have in their closet – ladies do you agree?

Denim is something I have a lot of as I wear jeans quite a lot, although I do have a lot that don’t quite fit me as well. I need more basic plain tees as most of mine are patterned x

I totally agree with you on this! I almost have the things here in this list. Women should have them in case they will need them.

Great list! A few years ago I realized that I needed to give up heels. They just aren’t comfortable enough for me to wear any more.
