Everyone loves city escapes but not everyone knows how to pack cabin bag only weekend stash. Over the last 5 years of solo travel, I have picked up various tips on packing only essential items that I will actually use. And it all comes down to having the right discipline not to overpack.
As a travel addict, I have become quite an expert on cabin bag only weekend stash to take with me on getaways. In order to maximise my vacation time, I often go on long weekend getaways around Europe. Family and friends often ask me how I manage to pack so little when I travel abroad.

Cabin Bag Only Weekend Stash
Over the last few years, I have become quite proficient in packing items that essential per trip. When I started participating in the take 12 trips solo adventures, I learned to only pack items of use. Previously, I used to pack everything including the kitchen sink and only to not use half of the items I packed.
Thru trial and error, I have worked out what items I should back for every trip and a few extras for the season. Anyone can learn to pack only the essentials, it just takes a lot of practice and discipline. In this post, I will share a few tips that have worked for me over the years.

Be weather conscience
I am a summer baby and often struggle to pack clothes for other seasons because I mostly own summer clothes. I have learnt over the years to be weather conscience and pack items suitable for my departure and destination. There is nothing worse than packing the wrong items for your destination and having to spend money unnecessarily.
Backpacks are your friends
When I started solo travelling, I used to tag my small suitcase on every trip and soon realised the inconvenience it brought. I am an active traveller and prefer to walk around my destination to get familiar. Most hotels don’t allow check-in until 2pm, tagging a suitcase around can be a pain and a nuisance. I have found package easier to manage and move around with especially when I have a packed itinerary.
Water Bottles are everything
I am someone who is bad at drinking water especially when I am on a go so I take water bottles with me. Not only is it convenient, but it’s also cost effective too, I often refill my water bottle at the airport. Another thing about water bottles is you’re saving the planet by buying less plastic. I often buy on the go squash to make juice since I don’t like tasteless water.
Pack comfortable footwear
I am someone who loves nothing more than exploring the city on foot if possible and don’t mind a hike. Packing the right footwear can make or break a trip, I made a rookie mistake of packing canvas instead of trainers. You can imagine how my feet felt after 6 hours of touring the city on foot.
Always pack an umbrella
I don’t if its because I live in the UK but I have learnt the importance of always packing an umbrella. The first time I visited Brussels I was super happy I walked almost everywhere until it started raining nonstop. I pack an umbrella not only to protect from the rain but also the sun, both Zambia and Thailand have unforgivable temperatures.

Weekend Cabin Stash Essentials
I have been on more getaways in my life than I care to remember and most have been solo trips. It’s these trips that have helped me to curate a list of must-carry items for getaways. I never travel anywhere without these items, these are almost always in my carry on baggage.
- Toiletries – though makeup is not high on the list, I do pack eyebrow makeup. I pack mouthcare items, cleansers, serum and moisturiser, haircare items (if necessary) and lip care items.
- Change of clothes – I always pack skin jeans, white or black top or jumper, sleepwear, undies, bras and socks.
- Snacks – I am a snacker and always have a chocolate bar, fruits and anything I can take past security
- Entertainment – we are all different, I am a blogger so I always have my laptop and movies downloaded on it. Music is something I always have on my phone and for this, I always carry a portable charger to stay juiced.
- Books – I rarely read books except when I am on a plane. Sometimes I get tired of watching movies and listening to songs, reading a good book helps pass the time.
I don’t like to overpack my cabin bag no matter how long or short the trip is, I like to be light. Over the last 5 years, I have found myself becoming more and more of a minimalist than ever before. On your next trip, make sure you have a cabin bag weekend stash comprised of these you will actually need and use.

You are totally right that walking around with a suitcase takes the fun of travelling away. A backpack is so much more convenient, and it always fits the cabin lockers.

I find cabin baggage only really hard, as I have a lot of medical supplies that take up the majority of room. I have started to become better at it but it’s definitely an art

All great points and I wish I’d learnt sooner to travel this way. It is so much easier. I managed my weeks adventure in the arctic just with a day back pack so there is no stopping me now!!!
