Looking back at each decade, I feel both ‘older’ and ‘younger’, I see the change in my features, the change in my way of life, the change in my personality and the experience itched on my face. I am grateful for the life I have lived thus far and excited for the life I am yet to live.

2026 - 39, (Home, England), I am ready for this final year before my 40s but also ready for this next decade.
2016 - 29, (Oslo, Norway), this decade was about self discovery and building the life I dreamt about. The life that I am super proud of and truly grateful to be living. This decade, I built my financial life and in later years choose to heal from the trauma gained in the last decade and now I feel well equipped for the future.
2006 - 19, (Glasgow, Scotland), I thought I was grown (look at the cheekbones 🤣🤣) and ready for the world, chiiiild was I wrong, let’s just say, I am still resolving the trauma the decade brought me but I am grateful because I met my best friends and made decisions for the future I wanted to have. (Spoiler alert - I did better than I dreamed).
1996 - 9, (Home, Zambia) this was my birthday but my little sister insisted she had to be the one in the middle. The only way we knew whose birthday it was, was by standing in the middle but this year I remember baby sister crying her eyes out and refusing 🤨
1988 - 9 months, (Chililabombwe, Zambia) although my mother looks tired and traumatised😟, I know I was loved and happy.

Essential Summer Fashion items every woman needs

The last several weeks of summer have been absolutely blissful and I wanted to share some of the essential summer fashion items every woman needs in her closet. As a summer baby, I love everything summer including shopping for versatile pieces for my closet that I can re-style every season. Everyone is trying to be fashion-conscious as well as environmentally friendly so buying pieces that you can utilise for more than one season is ideal in my opinion.

Speaking of shopping, I have not done any clothes shopping for a while now but I have been eyeing a couple of pieces from women’s co ords especially as I am about to travel somewhere with pristine sandy beaches. Travelling is something that I love doing every single month but I also sometimes fall into the trap of wanting to buy ‘something’ for that particular holiday. To avoid this, I made share to create myself a capsule of essential summer fashion items that every woman needs to have – and I have seasonal ones as well.

Essential Summer Fashion items every woman needs

Like most people, I know the summer months, they are often filled with holidays to beach destinations, barbecues and splashing in the pool. As a child, we did not live anywhere near a beach but we had a small river not far from home, my friends and I loved nothing more than cooling off in the small river. Over the years, I have traded cooling off in a small river for incredible destinations like The Maldives, Bali, Thailand and many more.

My ideal of essential summer fashion items every woman needs will obviously differ from person to person but I think I have covered the basics that you will find in every closet in this post. As women, we often gravitate towards items or pieces of either ‘sentimental value’ or ‘comfort over style’, at least the majority of the time. I have jeans from over 10 years ago that I keep for sentimental reasons but I am also someone who always choose comfort over style – not to say that the items I love ain’t stylish pieces.

The list below is not exhaustive but it’s one that contains the essential summer fashion items every woman needs or should have in their wardrobe. These pieces are versatile, easy to style and can be paired with various items in your closet.

Maxi/Midi Dress or Skirt

Your summer wardrobe is not complete if it does not contain either something ‘maxi’ or something ‘midi’ depending on your personal style. I often gravitate towards maxi dresses because they are easy to style and often very comfortable – I can hide my food baby. Maxi dresses or skirts can be dressed up or down in throughout the year, in summer, you can style them with accessories like jewellery, in Spring or Autumn can be paired with a cardigan and scarf and in winter can throw on a winter jacket, titles and knee high boots.

Denim Shorts and Jeans

I am a sucker for a good denim anything whether shorts or trousers, my favourite pair of denim jeans I purchased over 10 years ago and in those years I literally lived in them. As someone blessed with long legs, you will often find me wear shorts in warmer months particularly in the summer months. Like jeans, I have shorts I purchased almost 7 years ago that I still wear at any given opportunity, they extenuate my figure and elongate my already long legs – I live for them.

Sandals/Open-toed shoes

During the warmer months, there is nothing I love more than walking around bare-footed, I don’t like my feet being enclosed in anything. But obviously, for the sake of social norms and when in public, I will wear my favourite sandals or open toed shoes. There is something about letting my feet ‘breathe’ that makes me really happy so more often than not, you will find me wearing shoes that allow for my feet to be well ventilated and were possible I will avoid trainers at all cost.

Oversized T-shirts

Not every woman loves a crop-top but almost every woman has that oversized or baggy t-shirt that they gravitate towards. I often pair mine with shorts giving the illusion that I am not wearing any bottoms. During the summer months, I practically live in my oversized t-shirts, outside of maxi dresses, they are the best at allowing me to hide my food baby and enjoy eating in peace.

Basic Tees and String tops

There is something about a basic tee in your closet that can shop first world problems, they are often my go to when I am running errands or wanting to just dress comfortably. When I am travelling I often opt for a basic tee or a string top as they are so easy to style plus are perfect for hot weather and can be paired with cardigans or jackets when the weather takes a turn.

There are so many items I can include in this post that are essential and can be found in women’s closets but then we would be here all day. I have purposely neglected ‘beach essential items‘ as I covered them in that post and many other posts on this website under the Fashion tab.

Denim shorts are my all-time summer favorite! It is versatile for beachwear, or even for spontaneous hiking activity. I also never underestimate an oversized shirt coz just like the denim short, it is versatile and always easy to style.

I don’t own any dresses, but have the rest! In the summer, I’m almost always in shorts, tank tops, and flip flops if not a swim suit.

My Summer essentials include tank tops, tshirts and a sweatshirt for those chilly Summer nights. Generally, the Summer also includes leggings and lots of swim suits.
