The Do’s and Don’ts of Acne Skincare

Unless you were born with great genes and impeccable skin, acne was probably an issue you have had to deal with. Dealing with constant breakouts can be frustrating, and though common in teens can be a lifetime issue for others. But in many cases, just making a few changes to your daily routine, could reduce symptoms and severe breakouts. Here are some of the do’s and don’ts for people with acne prone skin.

While living with severe or moderate acne can be difficult, there are ways to alleviate or even completely eliminate the symptoms. The tips in this article, can help reduce the number of severe breakouts and get your great skin back again.

Don’t Squeeze Pimples

One of the worst things done when you see a whitehead rearing its ugly head is to squeeze it. Whilst the bump might disappear, it might scar, trigger an infection and can delay the healing process.

And if you think popped pimples will be easier to cover up, you can think again. An intact pimple will have a rounder surface, whilst a popped will have a rugged surface. This makes it much more difficult to conceal even under makeup.

Be Careful with Conditioners

Lathered conditioner shouldn’t roll onto your back, this increases the chance of breakouts and cause oily skin too. Conditioners are full of heavy moisturisers, though great for hair, they can clog pores and cause breakouts.

When washing your hair in the shower, do everything first and remove conditioner last at an angle. This reduces the chance of the conditioner clogging the open pores on your back. Another tip is to always cleanse your face last to avoid conditioner clogging the pores making the skin acne prone.

Acne Skincare

Don’t Over Exfoliate

People with acne might be tempted to exfoliate more than usual, but you have to be careful when using exfoliants since they can lead to skin irritation, which will only make matters worse. While it’s still important that you exfoliate regularly to clear your pores, you should be looking at chemical exfoliants instead. There are tons of chemical scrubs on the market that will allow you to get rid of dead skin cells without abrasives.

Do Consult a Dermatologist

Though you might be tempted to treat acne at home, some cases might require consultation with a Dermatologist. Even though dermatologists can be expensive, it’s always a better idea to consult a professional if your symptoms are severe.

A certified dermatologist can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend the proper course of action. Especially for those who’ve only ever had minor issues with acne then suddenly experience a total breakout.

Clinics like Cedars Dermatology specialise in acne treatment and will be able to guide you towards better treatment options. The team at Cedars are led by the consultants on the General Medical Council Specialist Register for Dermatology. They will be able to give you more accurate advice and a worthwhile treatment plans.

Don’t Overexpose Yourself to Sunlight

Overexposure to sunlight is not only dangerous for people with acne, but all people in general. Too much sunlight can prematurely age your skin and can be disastrous for people with acne. Make sure that you avoid tanning beds at all costs and always use SPF cream before going out. Irrespective of weather conditions you could consider ways to protect your face from the sun rays.

Do Avoid Any Contact with the Face

The only times your fingers should be touching your skin is when you’re washing it. Hands can pick up all sorts of bacteria, irritants and allergens that could worsen your acne. Those with a habit of constantly touching your face, always keep your hands clean. Be mindful of your hand movements and clean you mobile clean at all times.

Really helpful and useful tips. I’ve been very lucky with my skin, but it’s sometimes hard to know what’s best to do when random spots do come out. x
