{Review} Hotel Fredrikstad, Norway

It’s been over a month now since I went on my girls weekend getaway to Norway in hopes of seeing and admiring the beautiful city of Oslo. I love having these weekend getaways abroad as it gives me a chance and opportunity to see and experience new cultures and broaden my knowledge of the magnificent beauty that is Mother Earth.

I mentioned in my weekend getaway to Norway post of how many hotels and B&B’s that I reserved and cancelled due to an indecisive friend (that time only). In the end we chose Hotel Fredrikstad not only because of the price but due to the proximity to the airport. I am one of those people who book hotels that are not too far from the airport and if they are, I have to either have private airport transfer or the place has to have really good public transport system. Because Norway is too blooming expensive €400+ for a cab, how ridiculous is that? We chose a hotel that was easily accessible via public transport and wouldn’t be more than an hour and half.

Hotel Fredrikstad is the small, cozy hotel with the good breakfast. With our unique location centrally by the Cathedral Park in Fredrikstad we have a few minutes walking distance to most of the town’s amenities.
These include the city’s shopping district, Fredrikstad Stadion, wharf promenade, ferry to the Old Town and Stromstad, train station, bus terminal and marina. The hotel was reopened in May 2011 and has undergone a restoration and modernization and is today as an affordable and modern family hotel. We have clear and preserve the style of this wonderful building no oozing history of the Old Fredrikstad in the walls. Our staff will do their utmost and then some for you to thrive as our guest.

Location: 30 minutes from Moss Lufthaven and a 10 minute walk from Fredrikstad bus station. You can easily get to the hotel via train but I recommend a bus as there are no connections and it’s reasonably priced for Norway (£10 or less). The hotel is next to a lovely park in front for those with kids and a river stream in the next street behind the hotel.

First impressions: When we went we got lost due to the construction work outside which blocked an easy access to the hotel but we rang them up and they came outside to meet us (we had actually walked to behind the hotel). Other than that, we were nicely welcomed by a lovely receptionist who spoke wonderful English. Check in was painless and they indulged our knack for taking pictures #bloggerfirstworldproblems. You have an option to pay on arrival, before (if booked directly) or at the end of your stay. There was three of us so she gave us three key cards for the room which I think was very considerate of them.

Room and Beds:  I was impressed by the size of the room, we were given a double bed and a simple bed. It was nothing special but big enough to cater for our needs, so imagine how  pleasantly surprised I was when I slept on the bed and felt the bed wrap me in a loving embrace and whispered sweats dreams into my ears!!  I am sure you know that feeling,  after you’ve had a long day and it feels like you’ve been awake for days then you drop into bed and the bed understands your aches and pains and just embraces you? Yep, that’s the feeling I got. Honestly just looking at the bed it was nothing special but once you were in it now that’s something special. I kept thinking I should ask the receptionist where they got the bed and the duvets as I need to go buy me one (obviously I forgot as I was too preoccupied with the bed).

Bathroom: It too was basic and clean, I appreciated the hot water, the pressure of the shower and general cleanliness of the bathroom/toilet room. We had fresh towels which we used for the duration of our stay. There was the usual complimentary hand cream and shower/shampoo in the bathroom but nothing else which is fine for 3*.

Breakfast/Dinning area: it was large enough for over 10 people to occupy at the same time. The food was really nice but slightly cold on both mornings when we had breakfast. There was a variety of foods to chose from, Norwegian style or English style plus fruits and sweet dessert bar thrown in for good measure. I loved that they had a lot of different tea flavours and not just coffee. The food was nicely cooked and tasted really yummy. What impressed me the most is that there was free waffle making at night, the lady showed us how to make them using the waffle maker and left us to our own devices and we were allowed to stay until 10pm (started at 7pm). It is definitely something unique to them because none of the places have stayed in have such offerings for their guests.

Service: We received amazing service throughout our stay, the hosts were nice, friendly and spoke good English. They were easy to approach and where open 24/7 which was reassuring as we had arrived almost past midnight so it was nice they waited. The hotel offers free WiFi, as a blogger this is a must have. I spend my day exploring but when I return I want to share some pictures or start up posts whilst everything is fresh in my mind.

Pricing: We paid £154 (NOK1791), for the room for three people with breakfast included for 2 nights. Remember Norway is  very expensive country, I was ok with the pricing since I was sharing and I liked it had free breakfast included (I am a simple girl).

Overall the hotel receives 3/5, 2 deducted for the cold English breakfast on both days we have breakfast. Otherwise it’s a great hotel, budget friendly and I would stay there again. I realised in hindsight if we had asked them to warm up the food they would have.

    It looks like a very swishy hotel! We’re like you and don’t like to be too far away from airports which make the transfers a bit more bearable and saves money – especially in Norway! Very expensive!

    The hotel looks great for a 3* ive never been to norway so i didnt know it was expensive, its a good thing to know as all of europe is on our to go list!

    Relatively well priced hotel! Norway is super expensive for those who don’t live here. Cold breakfast is very typical here in Norway. That is what is traditionally served. Glad you had a great time.

      I know right, it totally hurts trying to have a good meal there. We spent £60 on food for the 3 of us and that was just starters and a drink lol

    It is funny what a difference free food makes especially if it is yummy. Just your description of the bed would make me want to stay or perhaps do a bit more research as to where they got their linens.

    All round it looks very good for the size of the room, location and price. My husband lived in Denmark for a while so I know how ridiculously expensive Scandinavia can be.
